The University of Hartford’s College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture (CETA) offers programs geared towards technology, research, and growth preparing students for future careers in engineering and architecture. Over the summer, computer science faculty advanced research, secured competitive grants, presented at international conferences, and strengthened STEM education across Connecticut.

In August, CETA students Javier Serrano ’27 and Brianna Montano-Vazquez ’27, along with University of Bridgeport students, headed to Spain for the Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project, supported by the NASA Connecticut Space Grant Consortium.

The team spent three months preparing to launch and recover high-altitude balloons during the August 12 total solar eclipse, collecting data on the moon’s shadow, ozone levels, and solar radiation. Javier served as the team’s Telemetry Officer, tracking the balloons, running launch predictions, and leading helium fill operations.

What started as a childhood dream became a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to put engineering into practice, collaborate across universities and cultures, and contribute to real scientific research.

From building his first computer in second grade to launching a career as a simulation engineer, Sean McKenna ’26 has turned a lifelong curiosity into a career in engineering.

As a Computer and Electronic Engineering Technology graduate with a minor in Computer Science, Sean found the hands-on experience at UHart helped prepare him for life beyond the classroom. Through practical projects, supportive faculty, and an internship at Draper Laboratory, he gained the technical skills, and confidence, to take on real-world engineering challenges.

His internship experience ultimately led to a full-time position at Draper, where he’s now growing his career as a simulation engineer.

The University of Hartford’s Architectural Design + Technology (AD+T), Computer and Electronic Engineering Technology (CEET), and Electromechanical Engineering Technology (EMET) programs have earned six-year accreditation from the ABET Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission (ETAC), the maximum accreditation period.

The achievement follows the submission of a comprehensive ABET self-study report in July 2025, a successful campus visit in October 2025, and a subsequent review of supporting documentation.

This accomplishment is a testament to the dedication of department chairs, program directors, faculty and staff who contributed to the self-study materials, assessment efforts, campus visit and review process. Their collective commitment to academic excellence and student success played a vital role in this achievement.

Biomedical engineering student Jasmin Enriquez '27 has been admitted to the Facilitated Graduate Admissions Program (F-GAP), a mentoring initiative that supports students pursuing graduate studies in mathematical sciences through individualized guidance, faculty mentorship, professional development, and assistance with the graduate application process. F-GAP also provides opportunities to build connections with graduate programs and participate in programs such as the Math Alliance's Field of Dreams conference, which brings together students, faculty, and graduate program representatives for networking, mentoring, and exploration of graduate study opportunities.

A key component of F-GAP is its triad mentoring model, which pairs each scholar with an undergraduate faculty mentor and a graduate faculty facilitator. Jasmin will be supported by Assistant Professor of Mathematics Anastasiia Minenkova as her undergraduate mentor, alongside a graduate faculty facilitator, creating a network of guidance and support as she navigates graduate school preparation and admissions. This collaborative mentoring structure helps scholars strengthen their applications, expand their professional connections, and gain insights into graduate education and future career opportunities.

Jasmin's participation in Field of Dreams and admission to F-GAP reflect her ongoing commitment to academic and professional growth. Through these experiences, she continues to expand her network, explore future opportunities, and prepare for the next stages of her educational journey.

UHart research is reaching new heights! Recent graduates Jagbir Singh Shergill M’26, and Tucker Rice ’26, presented their aerospace research at the 2026 ASME Fluids Engineering Division Summer Meeting in Bellevue, Washington.

Their research on delta-wing aerodynamics, conducted with Professor Ivana Milanovic, explores vortex behavior in subsonic and supersonic flight and supports the design of next-generation high-speed aircraft. ✈️

Now, Shergill is developing lunar lander technology at a NASA-funded aerospace startup, while Rice will pursue a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at UConn this fall.

Rudy Al Ahmar, assistant professor of aerospace engineering, joined WTNH to provide expert insight into a SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage that impacted the Moon.

During the interview, Al Ahmar explained the factors involved in tracking and navigating spacecraft over long distances, as well as how a rocket stage can ultimately end up on a collision course with the Moon. He also discussed the significance of the event for the growing field of lunar exploration and the challenges engineers face as more spacecraft and debris travel through the space between Earth and the Moon.

Al Ahmar’s News 8 appearance highlights the expertise of UHart faculty and their ability to bring aerospace engineering knowledge to current events in space exploration.

Professor Ivana Milanovic co-authored two companion research articles published in the August 2026 issue of the Journal of Fluids Engineering, the flagship journal of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

The companion papers, ‘Unsteady Wake Dynamics Behind a Sphere: A Numerical Investigation’ and ‘Experimental Flow Visualization Around a Sphere,’ present complementary computational and experimental investigations of the complex unsteady wake that develops behind a sphere. Published consecutively in the same issue, the articles integrate high-fidelity numerical simulation with state-of-the-art volumetric flow visualization to provide complementary perspectives on the same fluid mechanics phenomenon.

The publications are the result of an international collaboration among researchers from the University of Hartford, Coburg University of Applied Sciences and Arts (Bavaria, Germany), and LaVision GmbH (Göttingen, Germany), and contribute to ongoing advances in computational fluid dynamics, experimental fluid mechanics, and flow visualization.
