Being misunderstood is the most common experience for neurodivergent individuals. Imagine struggling to start something and the ones you love and rely on for guidance assume you are just being lazy. Soon, that inner voice will start to look for confirmation bias where laziness is part of their identity. Internalizing laziness leads to shame about the productive struggle.

I could spend a year on helping children transition. As an elementary teacher, I needed to make sure all 25 of us transitioned between topics, rooms, lunch, recess, specials, from home, to home, etc. I felt like the day was a constant transition. And not all strategies work for all kids! My classroom was full of unique minds and I have quite a few tricks up my sleeve!

Power struggles erode trust and connection in relationships. Sometimes it helps to know what might be fueling them. My daughter and I will often stop once we are aware we are entering this dynamic and run through the checklist.

1. Let’s get a snacks and a drink of water and sit down close to each other and figure it out!

Sometimes power struggles can be a direct link to get that dopamine dump. More on this on future days.
