The Puerto Rican/Latino Studies Project of the University of Connecticut’s School of Social Work began in 1980 under the lea

dership and conception of Julio Morales, a professor of the School of Social Work. It began as a program funded by the National Institute of Mental Health in order to prepare and increase the Social Work workforce to be trained in Puerto Rican and Latino populations and client systems. The project as a part of the school was institutionalized and therefore there are no original Articles of Incorporation because it is not an agency, rather an educational component to the School of Social Work. The University saw this as an important aspect to its educational plan as to incorporate diversity and education of future workforce in relation to working with Latino clients and community. Latino issues for the first time were incorporated into the curriculum and also it called for an increase of visibility of the school’s own students who identify themselves as Latino. The project is to help serve and encourage Latino students to complete their post-graduate degrees in the Masters and PH.D level. Currently the Puerto Rican/Latin@ Studies Project consists of five faculty members, two Social Work Interns and work-study students. It also operates with an Advisory Board. The current faculty members are Antonia Cordero, Ph.D., Catherine Medina, Ph.D., Lirio K. Negroni-Rodriguez, Ph.D., Lisa Werkmeister Rozas, Ph.D., and Cristina Wilson, Ph.D. The current Project Social Work Student Interns are Amy Ramirez and Yanira Wolfgang-Pinto.

To all UCONN social work alumni, faculty and staff who once went to Vieques, Puerto Rico as part of the UCONN School of Social Work Travel Study to Puerto Rico (Exchange Program with UPR), I want to convey a very sad new:
Our Vieques collaborator, Roberto Rabin, died yesterday 3/28/2022 in Vieques, Puerto Rico.
Roberto was a leader and activist. Every time we took social work students to Vieques, Roberto would meet with us. He was our strong supporter. We would arrive to Vieques on a Friday and on Saturday morning Roberto and several community leaders, including Nilda, would welcome us for educational workshops at the "Museo Conde Mirasol". We even did several radio shows with him through Radio Vieques. For 22 years we (UCONN) kept going to Vieques every other year. We always looked forward to our meeting with Roberto Rabin and the leaders. It feels so sad to know he is gone. I encourage us to find out how we can support the Museo and the community initiatives currently present in Vieques which he was part of, and that Nilda and the community may continue.

Mrs. Gloria Gerena, social worker and community leader, died today in Hartford, CT. My sincere condolences to the family and the entire community in Hartford and surrounding areas. Impacted the lives of so many people because of their dedication, dedication, leadership and unconditional service.

Dona Gloria was one of the first Latin social laborers in Hartford and helped a lot in the training of new and new social work professionals. Rest in peace.
