What should we actually be teaching tomorrow's medical coders?

We love hearing from you!
Always happy to pass along your wonderful ideas at the next meeting, please comment or reach out with your thoughts.

MCDE founder Danielle Bagnell had the opportunity today to serve as an industry expert with local community college and trade school coding programs as they evaluate how to strengthen their curriculum and better prepare graduates for employment.

And the conversation went well beyond learning code sets and passing a certification exam.

We discussed Excel and analytical skills, communication and people skills, AI literacy and how it should be incorporated into coding education, upcoming coding changes, and what employers need from new coders entering today's workforce. We even discussed local chapters and the coding community.

At MCDE, we believe there is an important difference between being prepared to pass an exam and being prepared to do the job.

Strong coding education should accomplish both.

We're grateful for opportunities to contribute to the future of medical coding education and help prepare the next generation of professionals for successful, sustainable careers. 🍀💚

Another great evening of teaching the AAPC CRC® course!

Students explored the relationship between Medical Decision Making (MDM) and diagnosis support, discussed how the principles of MEAT align with provider documentation, and learned why clinical relevance is essential when determining whether a diagnosis should be reported.

The discussion naturally expanded into Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI), emphasizing how complete, clinically relevant documentation supports accurate coding, quality reporting, compliance, patient care, and appropriate HCC capture.

Thank you to another fantastic group of CRC students for the thoughtful questions and engaging discussion. Tonight's focus was on one of the most important chapters in risk adjustment and auditing: Diagnosis Documentation & Coding.
