ASTM’s medical and surgical devices committee (F04) has approved a new standard that provides details and considerations for planning and conducting a seal zone leakage assessment for stent grafts.

According to ASTM member Lucas Chavez-Pardini, the new standard will be used by commercial and new product development quality engineers evaluating stent graft devices for medical device companies.

Congratulations to Fahad Hakami on completing ASTM International’s two-week Technical Visitor Grant Program!

During visits to ASTM headquarters, Washington, D.C., and ASTM October Committee Week in Jacksonville, Florida, Fahad learned about ASTM’s standards development procedures and explored topics related to sustainability, resilience, and the circular economy.

Hakami is a part-time technical committee lead for Information and Information Technology within the GCC Standardization Organization (GSO), and standards development projects manager and committee lead for SASO, Saudi Standards Metrology and Quality Organization.

ASTM’s recovered carbon black committee has approved a standard that will help establish particle size metric and method for determining particle size info.

Decreasing particle size in the milling step and reducing presence of trace oversize particles improves performance.

Last week, ASTM International welcomed Fahad Hakami of SASO, (Saudi Standards Metrology and Quality Organization) as part of the ASTM Technical Visitor Grant Program.

During his visit to ASTM headquarters and Washington, D.C., Fahad met with ASTM staff to learn more about ASTM's standards development processes and its work in sustainability and the circular economy. He also had the opportunity to engage with industry and standards leaders, including: Sean Browne of Armstrong World Industries (pictured below); Judy Zakreski 赵笛 of the International Code Council (ICC) (pictured below); Krista Gonzalez of Carlisle Construction Materials; Sharon Okello of ANSI - American National Standards Institute (pictured below); Emily Sanchez of the Recycled Materials Association (ReMA); and various staff from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

These discussions offered a broad perspective on the role of standards organizations, industry stakeholders, and trade associations in supporting sustainability and circular economy initiatives.

ASTM’s electrical and electronic insulating materials committee (D09) is developing a proposed standard that will be used to compare the creep strength of insulation systems in a control environment.

“This method has been successfully used in the past to show some difference in material properties, in one case when exchanging the liquid and another when exchanging the solid, but with the finalization of this ASTM standard, it will help bring further validity and awareness to the method,” says Greaves, laboratory services manager, Weidmann Electrical Technology, Inc.

The standard will bring further awareness to creep strength testing.

ASTM's plastics committee has approved two revisions to strengthen biodegradation requirements for the standard specification for labeling of plastics designed to be aerobically composted in municipal or industrial facilities (D6400).

This November, ASTM's committee on commercial spaceflight (F47) marks its 10th anniversary. A milestone that reflects the development of the committee’s technical standards, it also represents a decade of collaboration.
