ASTM has launched its Critical and Emerging Technologies (CET) Division, formerly the Advanced Manufacturing Division, scaling the standards model it built in advanced manufacturing to address technologies that are converging fastest.

“The launch of this division reflects where ASTM is heading as an organization, from developing standards to delivering standards solutions across the technologies reshaping the global economy,” says ASTM International President, Andy Kireta. “We have proven this model in advanced manufacturing, where our community built a globally adopted framework jointly with international partners, and through Centers of Excellence that embed standards early in the research process. The CET Division scales that approach in partnership with industry, government, academia, and standards bodies around the world.”

To help alleviate anxiety around use of AI, existing ASTM committees are looking to address this technology for everything from consumer products to unmanned aircraft systems.

And a new technical committee on AI in manufacturing systems has just been approved.

The following candidates will receive the 2026 ASTM International graduate scholarships:

Suleiman Muktari is a doctoral researcher in mechanical and materials engineering at Florida International University, USA, where his research focuses on cold spray additive manufacturing of advanced polymer nanocomposites for aerospace, automotive, and energy applications.

Saeed Davar is a doctoral student in civil engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He is an active member of ASTM International committees, including C01, C09, and C17. His research focuses on advancing the applications of 3D concrete printing for various structures in accordance with ASTM International standards.

Awetehagn Gebremariam is a doctoral student in civil engineering at Colorado State University. His research focuses on the durability and service-life performance of ASTM C595 Type IL Portland-limestone cement (PLC), and he is an active member of ASTM committees C01 and C09.

Puleng Moshele, originally from Lesotho, is a doctoral candidate in environmental health with the industrial hygiene track at the University of Minnesota. Her work uses ventilation modeling and exposure science to support practical workplace interventions.

ASTM International has more than 5,000 student members at all levels of education who pay nothing for membership. The organization offers several scholarship and grant opportunities each year.

A new standard will be used to screen brownfield properties — land previously used for industrial or commercial purposes that is now abandoned, vacant, or underused — with potential contamination for flood vulnerability.

ASTM's climate and community subcommittee (E50.07) is developing the proposed guide, which will provide technical guidance for using publicly available geospatial data to screen brownfields for potential precipitation-driven, inland flooding.

ASTM member Cynthia Annett notes that brownfield sites are often located in urban areas, which can be vulnerable to flooding due to heavy precipitation, especially in low-lying areas.

The proposed standard will provide guidance for using geospatial data to screen brownfields.

Leah Hepler, ASTM International's corporate controller, recently rewarded young artists for their work on t-shirt designs at the MacKenzie Park Summer Camp in West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.

ASTM sponsors the contest, in which campers create designs that are used for shirts the following summer.

In addition to the t-shirt contest, ASTM has supported this year’s camp by sponsoring two field trips to Riverbend Environmental Education Center in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania; and to the Mercer Museum and Fonthill Castle in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

ASTM's petroleum products, liquid fuels, and lubricants committee (D02) has revised its standard for aviation turbine fuel containing synthesized hydrocarbons.

“The aviation industry is working to address its climate impact by incorporating lower carbon intensity fuels derived from non-petroleum feedstocks and expanding flexibility in production,” says Dan Kadlecek, principal aviation fuel scientist, ExxonMobil Technology and Engineering Company. “This update to [standard] D7566 to incorporate methanol as an approved feedstock will help enable fuel producers to pursue this new manufacturing pathway for the production of synthetic aviation turbine fuel.”

The revised specification incorporates methanol as an approved jet fuel feedstock.
