Passport to the Arts Day (formerly VIP Day) will be September 18th at SRAA with two time slots depending on the age of your student.

PreK- 2nd Grade Families 8:15-8:45
3rd - 5th Grade Families 8:50-9:45

This is always a very well attended event and we look forward to seeing you soon! (Please be mindful we are a smaller school, and do not have the capacity for EVERY member of your child’s village to come - though we love all of that support!)

📣📣 Local Artist Spotlight: Tim Simpson

Next time you’re at SRAA, stop by our local artist feature area and see his incredible work!

Tim Simpson is an artist from Williamston, a small town in the Upstate of South Carolina. He has loved making art since he was a child. His father was also an artist and encouraged Tim to develop his creativity and create artwork of his own.

Tim began by tracing pictures from comic books, but his father challenged him to draw what he saw instead of tracing. When Tim was nine years old, his father built him a canvas, arranged a still life for him to paint, and helped him create his first oil painting. Tim later continued learning through art classes at the Greenville County Museum School of Art and Greenville Technical College.

Over the years, Tim has worked with many different art materials, including graphite, charcoal, and oil paints. He likes using graphite and charcoal when he wants to capture fine details, while oil paints allow him to experiment with light, color, and texture. Tim chooses the materials he uses based on what he wants each piece to express. He believes art is a way to share how he sees and feels about the world around him.

Tim’s artwork has been selected for several juried art shows, including the South Carolina Oil Painters Open, where one of his paintings was chosen to travel throughout the state. Three of his paintings were also featured in Contrast, a juried exhibition at the Thornback Gallery in Greenville, South Carolina.
One of Tim’s favorite places to find inspiration is Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. His first trip to the island felt like an adventure, but after many visits, he says riding the ferry to Ocracoke now feels like going home. The island has become the subject of many of his paintings.

Today, Tim spends much of his time creating art in his studio and enjoys sharing his love of art with others. This fall, he will be teaching an oil painting workshop at a gallery in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. When re isn’t painting or drawing, he enjoys working on the koi pond and garden he shares with his wife.

Teachers from across the district spend the day learning, collaborating, and sharing instructional strategies. Our SRAA team spent the day curriculum mapping and exploring meaningful ways to integrate the arts into instruction.

We’re excited to see this work come to life in our classrooms and, most importantly, in our students’ learning! 🎨🎭🎶

The district celebrated our Teachers of the Year and Support Staff of the Year at a reception this month at the Performing Arts Center, attended by family, friends, fellow educators, and others. District Teacher of the Year Evangeline Reddick (AHS LEADS) and District Support Staff of the Year Brittany Morrison (Saluda River Academy for the Arts), who were announced at the July 31 Back 2 School Rally, shared remarks with the audience. Winners receive keepsakes and a financial award from the district. (Some of the winners are pictured here following the reception.)
