TRACKING TRAINING POINT:
The fundamental principles, techniques, and sciences behind tactical acuity and visual tracking are firmly tied to the detection of sign and the subsequent analysis thereof. As detection and analysis are core skills within visual tracking, it is important for trackers to understand that these abilities are not mutually exclusive, but rather directly related.

By definition, ANALYSIS MECHANISMS are the means and processes through which a Tracker arrives at valid conclusions about a quarry’s actions or intent, and which result in observations that are in keeping with the phrase, “…is consistent with.” Highly trained, skilled, and effective trackers understand that detection without analysis is a missed opportunity, and analysis based upon incorrect detection is simply wrong. TRACK ON!

TRACKING TRAINING POINT:

Although the “Five O’s” of Tracking consist of Observation, Opportunity, Objectivity, Optimism, and Organization, OBSERVATION is paramount. The very essence of visual tracking, OBSERVATION involves the swift detection, prompt identification, and subsequent thorough analysis of sign.

While tactical acuity and the visual tracking are predominantly visual based skillsets, trackers should keep in mind that during tracking operations involving active manhunts, a quarry’s sign can be both visual and non-visual. Trackers should strive to operate with the highest degree of tactical awareness - “keep a clear eye,” “stay alert,” remain “switched on,” and always think about what they detect. Be Observant...Pay Attention...“Listen” to Your Environment...TRACK ON!

TRACKING TRAINING POINT:

As one of the “Five O’s” of tracking, OPPORTUNITY is a major consideration. Tracking is an opportunity driven application that is useful under a variety of tactical situations and operational conditions. However, tracking is not a panacea for every tactical problem encountered.

Certain tracking mediums capture good sign, while other mediums are incredibly difficult to work through. Additionally, tracking operations are fluid and dynamic events balancing the quarry’s actions and intentions off of the trackers’ reactions. Thinking about OPPORTUNITY, Trackers must adjust their formations and approaches accordingly, attempting to take advantage of the situation at hand. TRACK ON!

TRACKING TRAINING POINT:

Trackers must have a proper understanding of the concept of “perception verse reality” when detecting tracks in the field, and wisdom to determine “fact verse fiction” when analyzing tracklines. It can be very tempting to follow BOGUS SIGN, non-descript partial prints, and alleged tracks - particularly when the tracking pace slows down or becomes increasing difficult. Trackers need to think clearly, make wise choices, and never force the sign to fit a pre-determined narrative.

If the quarry does not travel in the particular direction that you wish, simply read the ground, analyze the facts, and follow the trackline to where it actually does go. Finding the genuine sign of your quarry and processing the correct trackline will save you from wasted energy and unnecessary frustration in the field. TRACK ON!

TRACKING TRAINING POINT:

SIGN is formally defined as “any sensory detected or observed change to the natural, normal, regular or routine state of the environment.” SIGN can be glaringly easy to spot or downright difficult to detect, both depending upon the situation and medium. For visual trackers concerned with Human Activity, SIGN can come in many forms - often best characterized by noticeable color changes and distinct geometric shapes/outlines. TRACK ON!

TRACKING TRAINING POINT:

New trackers should avoid the tendency to operate off of assumptions, speculation, or plain guess-work. When processing scenes, Trackers are encouraged to stick with simple FACTS: Size-Type-Pattern of Tracks, # Quarry Detected, Direction of Travel, Identified INGRESS/EGRESS Routes and Noticeable Dwell Locations. TRACK ON!

TRACKING TRAINING POINT:

When new tracking students find the skillset difficult, simply encourage them to search patiently for the sign and to look critically for any changes to the natural state of their environment. Look for specific instances of color change, texture change, shape and shine within the area. Trackers often relate these instances to COLOR, FLATTENING, REGULARITY, and the catch all sign category, of DISTURBANCE. Remind students that tracking is a science based application...easy enough to teach, easy enough to learn and easy enough to apply effectively in the field. TRACK ON!

TRACKING TRAINING POINT:

For LE and MIL Trackers, tracking operations can entail certain risks - from terrain, weather, and a quarry’s intent. While Trackers have little control over the terrain and nearly no control, short of prayer, over the weather, units employing tracking teams are empowered to deal with a quarry’s intent. As such, tracking teams can effectively mitigate the threats posed by the traditional anti-tracking approaches of “HEADSTART, HIDE, and HARM.” TRACK ON!

Tracking is tracking is tracking... Whether you are operating in vast deserts, deep jungles, rugged mountains, thick woods, end-less prairies, rocky tundra, or anywhere else, the fundamentals of the skillset remain the same. DO NOT let the sign’s location get you down. Stay vigilant, purposeful and focused. Simply think about what you see and continue to TRACK ON!

TRACKING TRAINING POINT:

When learning to track, students are encouraged to “don’t worry about being right and don’t worry about being wrong.” Bottomline, just think about what you see and make a decision accordingly. Tracking can be challenging under certain conditions and relatively easy on other occasions. Ultimately, it can be a very humbling experience in the field. TRACK ON!

TRACKING TRAINING POINT:

Visual tracking is a language; a written language that can be read, comprehended, and shared. As with any language, there are key vocabulary words associated with tracking:

(A) Sign - any change from the natural and normal state of the environment
(B) Conclusive Evidence/Sign - evidence or sign that is directly related to your quarry

For trackers to be successful in the field, they merely need to remember to look for (A), while hoping it is (B). One of the oldest of languages, tracking is not too hard to learn, apply, and share. TRACK ON!
