Illinois Aviation Academy holds FAA self-examining authority for the Certified Flight Instructor course. That means you can complete your practical exam right here at IAA with our own qualified examiners rather than waiting on outside scheduling. One of the most valuable parts of the Atlas Cadet Academy? The support system that goes beyond the cockpit. ✈️

Every cadet gets access to an app designed to help support for their training journey in the Atlas Cadet Academy. This isn't just another training resource; it's your connection to the an Atlas community and culture while you're still building flight hours.

Through the app, you'll get insights from pilots during fireside chats, learn about what life is actually like at different Atlas bases around the world, and connect with fellow cadets who are on the same path. These resources go beyond flight training to help train leadership skills and interview readiness that airlines are looking for.

What's the difference between a private pilot and a commercial pilot? Here's the short answer. 🎓

A commercial pilot certificate is the step that allows you to be compensated for flying. To earn it, you'll need to hold a Private Pilot License, log 250 total hours of flight time, pass an FAA knowledge test, and complete your practical exam. Think of it as a higher standard of airmanship, not just flying for fun, but flying with a professional level of precision and responsibility.

A flyover to honor 250 years. 🇺🇸

Over the 4th of July, we were honored to take part in DeKalb County's celebration of America's 250th anniversary with a flyover to mark the moment. There's something special about looking up and seeing aircraft overhead on a day dedicated to our country, a small tribute from all of us at Illinois Aviation Academy to a big milestone. Thank you to everyone who came out and celebrated with us.

Here's to 250 years. 🎆

What does it take to go from teaching in a Cessna to flying a corporate jet? ✈️

Marcellus Freeman knew he wanted to fly from the age of six, watching aircraft lift off from O'Hare while riding along with his father. He turned that early spark into action at Illinois Aviation Academy, first as a student and then as a Certified Flight Instructor. The hours he spent guiding students through weather changes, first solos, and checkride prep help sharpen skills in Crew Resource Management, his composure under pressure, and his ability to think quickly in the cockpit. Instructing also taught him to stay calm and keep situational awareness when conditions shifted fast. Today he flies the Hawker 900XP for Gary Jet Center, where landing speeds run more than double what he trained on in a Cessna 172. That meant doing twice the work in half the time, and the foundation he built while instructing at IAA is what helped him adapt to the pace of corporate aviation.
