Great leaders do not need to have every answer! They DO need to show up, follow through, and adjust.
✅ Avail-ability... Be there!
✅ Respons-ability... Own it!
✅ Flex-ability... Adapt!
These are the GREAT “Abilities” that take leaders FAR.
Tag a leader who brings all three to their team!

Have you ever been part of an environment (club, activity, sport, classroom, or ensemble) where you felt that you didn't belong? Where you had to mask your authentic self to fit in? In these situations, effort, energy, and engagement are lost to the constant adaptation to the outside environment.
Conversely, when leaders build environments designed to welcome all members as their authentic selves, that effort, energy, and engagement can now be harnessed to work toward common goals and shared values. These are not only no longer wasted, but are critical components of the group's success.
Reflect on your program's culture. Is this a space of belonging for all members? How does your organization communicate belonging?

MANY band directors and student leaders bear the brunt of the responsibility for recruitment of new members for their programs. During the early season, we often focus heavily on new members and may take our returning members for granted.
What are you doing to RETAIN your current membership? Are they excited to return? Is that enthusiasm something they will spread to new members?
Recruitment is most impactful when the program's FULL MEMBERSHIP is actively engaged in the process. They will do so naturally if they feel valued, energized, and excited for the new season. How does your program's culture demonstrate both the value of returning members and the open invitation of new ones?

With the 2026 season starting for your program, some members may be asking themselves "why?"
❔"This seems like a lot... why should I try this?"
❔"Why return for another season if I've already done this?"
❔"Why keep coming back?"
EVERY member of your ensemble is on their own pathway and brings a unique perspective to your organization. Embrace those perspectives and use them to strengthen your program!
New Members - You don’t know where you fit yet. Everything is new, everything is uncomfortable, and you’re figuring it out one rehearsal at a time. That feeling? It means you’re in it. Take this season to DEFINE the expectations and learn to meet them.
Veteran Members - The newness is gone. Now it’s just you and the work. You know enough to know how much further you have to go — and you show up anyway. How can you REFINE the knowledge you gained in the last season and use it to serve the program this year?
Leaders - You’ve been through it. The hard days, the doubt, the grind. And now you finally understand what it was all for. You’re not just in the band anymore — you are the band. How will you take all that learning and REDEFINE this experience for the newer members and those who will come to the program after you've moved on?
Whatever pathway you find yourself on, EMBRACE it and share your perspective to help strengthen your program.
