S*xual Citizens: A Landmark Study of S*x, Power, and Assault on Campus compiles years of research conducted at Columbia University. It offers many insights on how individuals’ identities are tied to power, privilege, oppression, and marginalization, and the critical role these identities play both in sexual projects and in sexual assaults.

Drawing on the S*xual Health Initiative to Foster Transformation (SHIFT) at Columbia University, the most comprehensive study to date of sexual assault on a campus, Jennifer S. Hirsch and Shamus Khan present a new framework for sexual assault prevention that emphasizes sexual assault’s social roots, based on the powerful concepts of “sexual projects,” “sexual citizenship,” and “sexual geographies.”

Center for Civic Engagement & Social Impact (CCESI) Statement on the Insurrection in the U.S. Capitol

On January 6th, in one of our most sacred civic spaces, we witnessed a mob –some of which displayed symbols of white supremacy– engage in acts of violence, destruction, and desecration. This abhorrent display was an affront to our republic and a brazen attempt to undermine our democracy.

The actions we witnessed were fueled by disinformation, division, distrust, and a deep animus shared by too many in our nation. These are ingredients that threaten a democracy. And sadly, they have been fomented and left unchecked by too many in positions of power.

So let us be clear:

o There has been no credible evidence of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 general election;

o Black Lives Matter;

o And we remain steadfast in our commitment to equipping all students with the knowledge and skills necessary to participate effectively and constructively in democratic life as agents of positive social change.

Students! Looking for a paid opportunity to assist with the upcoming presidential election in November? Keep reading!

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of the older Americans who typically manage polling places have had to withdraw. It is essential to keep polling places open to enable full participation in the 2020 election. The Campus Compact Safe Elections Project are looking for Student Recruiters to assist in recruiting their peers as poll workers for the November 2020 election. Campus Compact will train Student Recruiters to be effective organizers and educators about the importance of poll workers for our democracy.

Student Recruiters will receive a $500 stipend upon completion of their work, which will take place over about 3 weeks in October. Given the nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, all training and resources will be provided online.

This Friday, June 19th is Juneteenth.
What is Juneteenth?

On June 19, 1865, about two months after the Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox, Va., Union Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform enslaved African-Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended. General Granger’s announcement put into effect the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued more than two and a half years earlier on Jan. 1, 1863, by President Abraham Lincoln.

The holiday received its name by combining June and 19. The day is also sometimes called “Juneteenth Independence Day,” “Freedom Day” or “Emancipation Day.” (https://www.nytimes.com/article/juneteenth-day-celebration.html)
