Rustin Urban Community Change Axis

Rustin Urban Community Change Axis RUCCAS, a university-community center of Arts and Humanities which houses the Urban Com YES is an interdisciplinary minor.

RUX is one of the few community organizing majors in the U.S. that is based in an interdisciplinary but deeply humanities based approach. These programs provide all students with an interdisciplinary, critical understanding of the role that urban communities and youth can play in social change. The central perspective that we want to see our students utilizing in community field placements (and the perspective that we hope to support community organizations taking) is that community and youth development is not just an individualistic, pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps phenomenon. In fact, individualistic approaches are important, but insufficient. Instead, we take a an organizing and critical youth work approach, which says that community and youth voice should get raised up about the issues surrounding them, that we should work collaboratively with each other and allies to put those challenges in social and political context to recognize that collective oppression has a role in every problem facing BIPOC, poor and working class people, youth, and others, and collective liberation has a role in every solution.
