🌲 The school that started the Ivy League domino effect isn't looking back.

Dartmouth was the very first Ivy to drop the pandemic-era "test-optional" pass, officially requiring SAT or ACT scores once again. The breakdown on why Hanover led the charge back to standardized testing:

📊 The Research Proved It: Dartmouth commissioned internal research that revealed a stark truth: standardized test scores were by far the single best predictor of whether a student would thrive on campus.

🎯 The "Hidden" High Performers: Counterintuitively, going test-optional hurt low-income and first-generation applicants. Many held back solid scores (like a 1400 from an under-resourced school) thinking it wasn't good enough for an Ivy, missing out on admissions offers.

🔍 Context Over Raw Numbers: Admissions officers reiterated that scores are judged in context—a 1400 from a rural or underfunded high school carries far more weight than the exact same score from an elite prep academy.

🌊 The Ivy Dominoes: Dartmouth's data-driven move created an immediate ripple effect, giving cover for Yale, Brown, and Harvard to quickly follow suit.

The percentage of students who party for more than six hours a week, as well as the percentage of those who spend more than six hours a week socializing face-to-face with friends, has fallen since 1994, according to UCLA’s Higher Education Research Institute. Meanwhile, the share of first-year students who reported feeling frequently isolated from campus life has more than doubled in the past two decades. A rising senior at MIT told Horowitch that, despite being involved in Greek life and athletics, he eats alone most days.

“I feel like I’m somebody who seeks social interactions,” he said, yet “I would say I am alone at least four or five days a week.”

Some researchers blame smartphones and social media. “Hours spent on social media crowded out time that people might previously have devoted to social interactions,” Horowitch writes. In addition, the coronavirus pandemic seems to have had a lasting effect on in-person interaction on campus, while clubs and extracurricular activities are now seen more as a good résumé addition than a socializing opportunity.

Some administrators have sought creative solutions, including offering a course that teaches students how to make friends, or creating new pathways across campus to increase the odds for individuals to physically encounter one another, Horowitch writes. “The more I can get students to run into each other, the better,” Brian Casey, the president of Colgate University, told Horowitch.
