When Natalie Strouse’s husband of 20 years died of cancer, she honored his memory by creating a scholarship in his name at the college where she taught accounting.

Each year, she helped select a student to receive a few thousand dollars at Notre Dame College, a small Catholic school outside Cleveland. But in 2024, the college closed. Strouse wanted to re-establish the scholarship at another institution.

She asked Notre Dame for the $30,000 endowment, which under the terms of the gift could only be used to support the scholarship.

Not possible, she said an administrator informed her. The money was gone.

Higher education is in real financial trouble and Strouse’s lost scholarship is one piece of the growing collateral damage. College leaders are cutting programs, laying off faculty—and digging into endowments to pay operating expenses.

In extreme cases, schools are covering day-to-day bills with funds that donors gifted for other purposes, without the donors’ knowledge or consent.

ETS, the company that had at one time written the , has purchased . There's no way to know for sure what this means for the direction of the ACT exam, but it's noteworthy that ETS's other exams are online and adaptive. The exit of private equity from the company is welcome!

Travis plays varsity basketball and hopes to play in college. He is also involved in Future Business Leaders at Salesianum School and wants to pursue physical therapy, preferably, at a southern university.

THIS is why they HAD to bring back the SAT🤦‍♂️ the Ivy League colleges have come under fire recently for rampant grade inflation which is also obvious in this chart given the average GPA is around a 3.7- but test optional students still managed to do poorly in comparison to their qualified peers.

To put this in context, a 3.5 is NOT a good GPA at Columbia. It’s a soft fail, and employers know this and our reacting accordingly. It’s not a coincidence that Colombia is reversing their test optional policy after the first year were test optional graduates. Tried to enter the workforce and failed to launch.

The Ivy League brand became valuable because it was a marker of the exceptional ability of the students. An SAT score is not enough to prove that you are exceptional, but it’s a really strong start and if you can’t get that, there’s no reason to think you’re qualified for the rest.

Reality is catching up with the Ivies and that’s why Columbia and ALL the other Ivy League colleges are going back to requiring the SAT.
