Providing scholarships, tutoring and leadership development to high school students in Ecuador.

The Starfish Foundation provides scholarship and mentoring to youth living in extreme poverty in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Though public schools in Ecuador are free, families often still struggle to provide all the necessary materials while living on minimum wage and trying to feed a whole family. Sometimes, the easiest solution is to not go to school and to look for work at a young age. Starfish Foundation believes in the importance of education as a catalyst for future success of each student and their communities, thus it provides in-kind scholarships, tutoring, and leadership development to students in financial need who have the motivation to continue their studies despite challenging circumstances. The name of the foundation is based off the inspiring starfish story of a young girl rescuing starfish from the beach, one by one. In the same way, The Starfish Foundation believes in the power of making a difference, one by one, to youth in Ecuador. The Starfish Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with EIN 45-3805106.

Through leadership art projects, our Starfish scholars have the opportunity to express themselves while building confidence, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. Back in April, we celebrated our graduates with a big party at a local indoor adventure park. The scholars and educators communed together by playing games, taking pictures, and eating good food.

In Ecuador, breaks from the school routine are a chance for scholars to connect with others and enjoy new experiences. At Starfish, these moments give our scholars time to have fun and explore their interests. Sometimes stepping away from the classroom is just as important as the learning that happens inside it. 🌴

Sports are an important part of student life in Ecuador, encouraging teamwork, confidence, and healthy habits. At Starfish, our scholars enjoy staying active while taking a break from academics. These moments bring energy to their day and remind us that learning also happens through movement and shared experiences!👟

This year, we continue to strengthen our educational programs at Starfish (as the school year runs from May to February, we are just starting!). Our students participate in tutoring sessions across six core subjects—Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, English, Sciences and Computing.
