Join us for the latest installment of our Jazz Lecture Series featuring Grammy-nominated pianist, composer, and educator Orrin Evans. Commissioned to create a dedication piece celebrating 100 years of the Criterions, Evans has earned international acclaim for his dynamic artistry, innovative compositions, and lasting contributions to the jazz community.

Throughout his distinguished career, Evans has performed and recorded with some of jazz's most respected artists while also collaborating across a variety of musical genres, demonstrating his versatility and broad artistic reach. Renowned as both a bandleader and collaborator, he continues to shape the contemporary jazz landscape through performance, composition, and mentorship.

This special event offers an intimate opportunity to hear Evans discuss his creative process, his commissioned work honoring the Criterions' centennial, and his experiences as one of today's leading voices in jazz. The evening will include conversation, musical insights, and live performance elements, providing a unique look into the life and work of an accomplished artist.

WCUSO Celebrates America

The West Chester University Symphony Orchestra opens its 2026–27 season with an all-American program of music by Elmer Bernstein, John Williams, Samuel Barber, and the East Coast premiere of Ovidiu Marinescu’s Our America. To conclude the concert, President Bernotsky joins the WCUSO as narrator in a performance of Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait.

Guest Artist Recital: John Lane and Allen Otte

The Innocents

An exploration of wrongful imprisonment and exoneration in the American criminal justice system, The Innocents cuts to the emotional core of the human experience surrounding these issues. This work of performance art features a variety of found-object and home-made instruments, electronic soundscapes, and spoken texts in an hour-long dramatic performance. Co-composed by the performers, percussionists Allen Otte and John Lane, these seventeen individual tableaux delve into the concepts of mistaken identity, incarceration, injustice, politics, psychology, and resilience. Otte and Lane have embraced their roles as advocates by cutting directly to the emotional core of the human experience surrounding the gross injustice that is wrongful incarceration.

"In performance we have the opportunity to direct and focus not only attention, but more importantly, to engage on an emotional level where experience is more than simply processing facts and figures. Art provides a platform for advocacy and affords us an opportunity to raise our voices in the name of something other than ourselves in an eloquent and hopefully memorable way. For all of us, creativity catalyzes change faster than awareness alone. In the current socio-political landscape where we are confronted with the most egregious examples of the opposite, our offering wishes to prove the power of empathic engagement with issues that ultimately touch all of our lives."

The Wind Ensemble & Wind Symphony in Concert

An American Hymnsong
The Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony open an exciting season of wind band concerts at the Wells School of Music with a program of classic and contemporary works celebrating the music of America. Brooke Pierson’s The Beginning of All Things announces the Wind Symphony’s performance followed by Dwayne Milburn’s American Hymnsong Suite. The progress and ingenuity of nineteenth century America is recognized in Erika Swanoe’s Steampunk Suite. The Wind Ensemble opens its performance with the recently composed River of Stars by Reena Esmail. Kevin Day’s tender Love, Come to Me and David Maslanka’s hymnsong inspired Symphony No. 7, complete the program.

Our concerts often highlight guest faculty and outside soloists, adding a unique touch to each performance. Every spring, the ensemble also takes on the role of the opera orchestra, bringing a rich and dynamic musical experience to our audience.
