Valentine vibes with this fun, easy activity. This simple activity focuses on fine motor skills, sorting and creating patterns. This was done with my 4.5 year-old and 2.5 year-old. This was great for both of them to do together.

Sunday funday snowy Valentines activity. This was used for both my 4.5 and 2.5 year olds. I love modifying the same activity so my kids can do them at the same time. I mixed up the numbers 1-12 and had my 4.5 year-old put them in numerical order. He then used a gripper to put the number of items in each tin. We took it a step further and I added a sheet for us to practice writing our numbers 1-12 as well. For my 2.5 year-old, we were focusing on one to one correspondence and fine motor skills by using the pasta to count out each piece to correspond to the number in the tin. This is easy and can be done with anything you have at home.

Subitizing is the ability to know how many items are in a set without counting. Ten and twenty frames are a great tool to help children subitize. I used heart shaped pasta and a printable ten frame that can be doubled. Very simple to do at home. Dice and dominos are also great to use for subitizing. This will help begin the understanding of number sense.

STEM activities activate their thinking of science, technology, engineering and math skills. We discussed all of the different ways STEM was used in these activities.

Teachable Moments

Tis the season to continue learning. Simple projects like building a gingerbread house with your children can teach basic math skills. Use the shapes to teach geometric figures such as a pentagon, rectangle, triangle, and square. You can also use the sides of the house as well as the decorations to teach symmetry. Make sure if you we're able to 'fold ' them in half that each side would look the same.

You can also measure each piece to introduce or reinforce perimeter by adding all the sides together, or you can teach the area of the square or rectangular shapes by measuring them and multiplying the base and height together. These are great teachable and bonding moments with your child.
