You voted, and I listened! ❤️

We spend SO much time talking about where our kids can get into college that sometimes we forget to ask an equally important question: Will they actually be happy there?

Here are 5 colleges with really happy students that I think more families should have on their radar:

❤️ University of San Diego
❤️ Denison University
❤️ Lafayette College
❤️ St. Lawrence University
❤️ Sewanee

Each has something a little different to offer, but all five are great reminders that the “best” college isn’t necessarily the most prestigious one. It’s the place where your student can learn, grow, find their people, and genuinely enjoy the next four years.

Which college did I miss?!👇

Want to be a doctor? 🩺 Your major does NOT have to be biology or chemistry.

One of my favorite conversations this week happened with my own doctor, who told me he majored in religious studies before going to medical school.

The key is completing the prerequisite coursework while choosing a major where you can thrive academically AND explore something you genuinely care about.

Anthropology. Public health. Engineering. Nutrition. Psychology. Humanities. There are so many ways to build an interesting path to medicine.

Pre-med is a path, not a major.

What did you (or your future doctor) major in? Drop it below! 👇

If your student likes business, don’t stop at business + economics. 👀

There are some seriously interesting majors that can lead to great careers in business—and keep the door wide open for an MBA later.

Supply chain. Information systems. Operations research. Hospitality. Organizational studies.

Which one surprised you most? 👇

We spend SO much time thinking about getting our kids INTO college…but what happens once they get there? ❤️

Some colleges are doing really interesting things to help freshmen build community from the very beginning—and it goes way beyond traditional orientation.

From outdoor adventures and community service to small-group experiences that create connections before classes even begin, these are the things I wish more families looked at when building a college list.

Because acceptance rates tell you who gets in.

They don’t tell you how it feels to actually be there.

SAVE this one for college research. 🎓

What other colleges do an amazing job helping freshmen find their people? 👇

My son is starting high school, and apparently even college admissions experts need these reminders. ❤️

Freshman year does NOT need to be about building the perfect college résumé.

Let them explore. Let them learn how to manage high school. Let them stumble a little.

There is plenty of time for everything else.

Freshman year is a transition—not a college admissions audition. 🥹

If Villanova, Notre Dame or Wake Forest are on your student’s list…don’t stop there. 👀

Providence, Dayton, Butler, Creighton and Gonzaga offer many of the things families love about those aspirational schools—strong academics, school spirit, community and a true college experience.

The best college lists aren’t built around the same 10 names everyone knows. 🎓

Business families—save this one. 💼👀

There are some fantastic undergraduate business programs hiding beyond the names everyone talks about.

Arkansas. Cincinnati. Alabama. Nebraska. Denver.

Each has a different reason it deserves a closer look.

How important is the college essay…really? 👀

The answer is more nuanced than most families realize.

Yes, a great essay can absolutely strengthen an application and help an admissions officer understand the person behind it.

But it usually can’t erase an academic record that isn’t competitive for that college.

A great essay can elevate an application. It shouldn’t be expected to rescue it.

These four colleges share part of their name…but that’s about where the similarities end. 👀

🌴 One gives you Los Angeles + creative industries.
🌆 One gives you Chicago + strong health sciences.
🎓 One offers a smaller, more traditional experience with some great honors opportunities.
🎵 And one puts music + media students in the middle of New Orleans.

The four Loyola universities are a perfect example of why I tell families not to make assumptions about a college based on its name—or overlook a school simply because it isn’t currently on everyone else’s list.

LMU. Loyola Chicago. Loyola Maryland. Loyola New Orleans.

Four very different places for four very different students.

Are any of these on your student’s list? Which ones?

Your student’s most impressive activity does not automatically belong at 1️⃣ on the Common App. 👀

This is one of the biggest misconceptions I see when students start ordering their Activities section.

Prestige matters far less than families often assume. I’m looking at things like commitment, impact, leadership—and what the activity helps me understand about the student.

Remember: admissions officers aren’t reading your Activities section in a vacuum. They’re forming a picture of who you are.

That means two students with the exact same 10 activities could—and sometimes should—order them completely differently.

If your student needs help choosing, ranking and writing their activities, my Ultimate Activities Section Toolkit walks them through the entire process.
