I squeezed in a little more fun with my very special class this morning! I've had a fabulous year with this wonderful group. They've grown so much this year, and it's been a great pleasure to work with them! They had step-up to 5th grade this morning, and lucky Mrs. Moore got to meet with her new class! Have a wonderful summer, everyone!

Our June 10th fieldwork at the Federal Courthouse in Portland has been cancelled, due to a trial that has been scheduled in the same courtroom we would have been visiting. We put our Welcome Packets together today, and now we'll mail them to the courthouse instead of presenting them ourselves. The packets will be distributed at the U. S. Naturalization Ceremony on June 20th. The class did a wonderful job on their packets, and I'm sure the recipients will be very pleased!

Our most recent expert speaker was Mr. Timothy St. Pierre, who came to teach the class more about Franco-American history and culture! Mr. St. Pierre was especially generous, and made crepes with strawberries for the class to sample! I was so busy helping out with serving them, I forgot to take a picture, but they were delicious!

Our NWEA testing is now completed! Yay! The class did an excellent job!

Permission forms for our final fieldwork on June 10th went home earlier, but many have not been returned yet. Please let me know if you need another copy. The fieldwork is at the federal courthouse in Portland. We usually present our Welcome Packets to newly-sworn citizens at their Naturalization Ceremony, but this year it's being held after school is out. Instead, we'll have a tour of the courthouse, and we'll present the court clerk with the packets. They'll be distributed to the new citizens on June 20th. The class has researched U.S. symbols and created bookmarks which show and explain the symbol. These bookmarks are an important part of the Welcome Packets, and they've done an excellent job on their art work, as well as their research!

What a fabulous day the class had with their Ellis Island Immigration Inspections and Bundle Sharing! They played their parts well and were were the most enthusiastic group ever! Students got a sense of what it might have been like, as they lugged their bundles and waited in line for their turn. Our amazing legal and health inspectors really played their part as well. Many thanks to Mrs. Desjardins and Mrs. Samuelson! They were very convincing in their roles. Students came back to class and presented their carefully packed bundles, and then we all celebrated with tea and treats! Many thanks to all of you who sent in special foods for the occasion. It was very much appreciated. The class enjoyed them immensely as they sipped their tea from fancy cups, sampled treats, and and shared their thoughts on the whole process they'd been through. Now, they'll add new insights into their immigrant letters. It was all so much fun, and I hope it's a day they'll always remember!

Today's guest speakers were from St. Andrew's Society of Maine, and came to teach about Scottish immigration and culture! Mr. James Roddin, president of the society, gave the class many details about Scottish history and contributions. The class was surprised to learn of the many Scottish inventions that have impacted our world such as the telephone, the TV, the steam engine, penicillin, X-rays, and many more. We also were treated to some beautiful bagpipe music, Irish soda, and some lovely gift bags! Tomorrow, students will dress up as their immigrant identity, go through mock Ellis Island inspections, and present their bundles to the class! It's a day they'll remember for a long time, and one of my favorite days of the school year!

We've having a very busy and fun-filled week! Yesterday, Alexandra Magnaud, of The Holocaust and Human Rights Center, visited our classroom for her presentation of "Jewish Life Before the Holocaust." Once again, the class was complimented on their excellent engagement and relevant questions/comments. I'm especially proud of them when we have guests! Today, we had two residents of West Bath, Dr. Gary Zartarian and Dr. Leah Zartarian, who came to teach the class about Armenian history and culture. They taught the class a fun dance, and they even brought some tasty treats for them to sample! Many thanks to these people who share their time and knowledge with us!

Our latest visitors were from The Italian Heritage Center in Portland! They taught the class about the many contributions which Italians have made to our state, from building bridges such as the Casco Bay Bridge and the Portsmouth Bridge, to the construction of the paper mills in Millinocket and Rumford. They established the St. Peters Church in Portland and created a "Little Italy" section of the city. Today, most of that area has been rebuilt, but some Italian establishments remain, such a Micucci's Market and Amato's. They also formed The Italian Heritage Center to honor their culture and history. The class enjoyed learning some conversational language, a song, sampling some freshly made pizelles, and playing a few games of bocce! Many thanks to this wonderful group for sharing their time with us!

The class had a wonderful visit today from our expert speaker, Michelle Josephson, of the Irish Heritage Center in Portland. She helped the class to understand the reasons for Irish immigration, and explained that many Irish immigrants came to Maine because it was the closest state to them. She showed the class examples of Irish culture, such as dance, music, and other arts. She even taught them the craft of making a St. Brigid's Cross! Guest speakers like these truly bring our immigration studies to life, and we're so appreciative of them! Once again, the class was highly complimented on their behavior and engagement when listening to a speaker!

Our immigration studies are going very well! Students will participate in our Mock Ellis Island Inspections on Thursday, May 15th. Students should have their outfit and bundle ready, as well as their completed script page for their presentation. Some students wish to bring in food items representing their country to share with the class. This certainly isn't required, but will only add to the fun, for those who wish to participate in it! We'll have our Ellis Island legal and health inspections first, and then we'll return to our classroom for bundle presentations. After, we'll have tea together and sample whatever goodies they bring to share. It's a very fun day, and one they won't forget for a long time! Thanks very much for your support in helping your child to be ready for this exciting day!

The class had some interesting fieldwork at The Franco Center in Lewiston today! When they arrived, they were surprised to see the school's name on the sign out front! Once inside, they heard a program about why Franco Americans came from Quebec to settle in the Lewiston area and work in the textile mills. These people formed the "Little Canada" section of Lewiston that you can still see signs of today. After that, they did a fun scavenger hunt to search for items in the gallery cases on each side of the building. The cases were filled with artifacts showing Franco American life and culture. Finally, they went on a walk to see the train trestle, tracks, and depot, where these people arrived. They also looked at the mill across the street where the Franco Americans worked. They learned a lot today! Special thanks to our parent chaperones- Katherine Larson, Erin Connolly, and Grace Cooney! We appreciate you!

The class did a wonderful job on our fieldwork at the Holocaust and Human Rights Museum in Augusta today! They listened to a program called, "Yearning to Breathe Free," and they took lots of notes on main ideas. We'll share those notes together tomorrow. The program enhanced our immigration studies, informing them about the history of past immigration in Maine and also about immigration in our state today. After, they toured a museum gallery with work by Maine artist, Lesia Socor. The class enjoyed the interactive part of the display where they got to do some stitching of their own! They had a quick lunch and then enjoyed some time out on the campus green before heading back on the bus. Many thanks to Alexandra Magnaud, our excellent instructor, and to our parent chaperones, Whitney Hall, Danielle McMullin, and Ken Belson. We appreciate your time and hope you enjoyed your day with us!

Tonight, many students in the class will participate in "The Battle of the Books" at Woolwich Central School. They've been preparing with Mrs. Fuller for quite a while now! We wish them the best of luck this evening!
