Let's take it a step further and look at an example from our Course 2 (Grade 7) textbook:

This image is from our new worktext. The number line is empty. At first, there seems to be no restrictions on where you can place the expressions. But once you place one expression, does that affect where you place the next one? A task that is full of uncertainties at the beginning stimulates your reasoning about the relationships between algebraic expressions. Which is what algebra is all about!
