Our August “Member of the Month” is Sumana Bhat! Stop by Cream City Clay to see her beautiful work in person, or even purchase a piece to bring home.
Sumana says “I started my clay journey in 2023 with no prior knowledge of ceramics as a student in a handbuilding class with Lila at Cream City Clay. That first experience opened a completely new world for me. Along the way, I explored different techniques, including slab building and wheel throwing. I mainly work with the coiling method because I enjoy building slowly, one coil at a time. I experiment with different clays, including porcelain, Brooklyn Red, and other stoneware clays, because each clay has its own personality and surprises me in different ways during the making and firing process. I often explore extremely thin walls, sometimes close to 1mm, pushing the limits of what clay can hold- a challenging process that keeps me learning, experimenting, and occasionally wondering if the clay is testing me or I am testing the clay! I fail often, especially when I try to make my thin-walled pieces behave! But over time, I have learned to enjoy those failures as much as the successes. My most precious pieces are not always the perfect ones—sometimes the ones that crack, lean, or come out with a surprise from the kiln are the ones that make me smile the most.”
