Bringing Stories to Life at Gonzalez Elementary ACE!

Our 2nd grade Gonzalez Elementary ACE students discovered that reading can become an adventure when you add a little imagination—and a few puppets!

During an engaging Reader’s Theater with Puppets activity, students stepped beyond simply reading words on a page and became the characters themselves. Using puppets to act out their stories, students practiced important literacy skills while having fun and expressing their creativity.

Through Reader’s Theater, our young readers worked on:

• Reading Fluency — developing smoother, more confident reading
• Expression — using tone, emotion, and character voices to bring text to life
• Speaking & Communication — practicing how to confidently share in front of others
• Reading Comprehension — understanding characters, events, and meaning within a story
• Confidence & Creativity — giving students a fun, supportive opportunity to express themselves

Activities like this demonstrate what makes learning beyond the bell so valuable. When students can read it, act it, experience it, and have fun with it, literacy becomes more than an academic skill, it becomes something they can enjoy! Way to go, Gonzalez ACE!

Building Our ACE Family at Gonzalez Elementary!

The first week of Gonzalez Elementary ACE was all about creating connections, building relationships, and helping our students feel right at home in their new afterschool environment!

Throughout the week, students participated in fun “All About Me” activities that gave them opportunities to share their personalities, interests, and favorite things while getting to know their classmates and ACE teachers.

Our students also enjoyed a variety of activities designed to ease them into their new afternoon routine, including:

🎨 Creative and social activities
📖 Short stories and reading
🏃‍♀️ Outdoor PE games and physical activity
✏️ Homework assistance
🧠 Educational games and challenges
🎲 Group favorites like Hangman
😊 Plenty of opportunities to talk, laugh, and make new friends!

These first few days are important. Before we can ask students to take academic risks, collaborate with others, or explore new experiences, we want them to know that ACE is a place where they belong.

By intentionally using our first week to establish routines, learn expectations, build relationships, and create a positive program culture, we are laying the foundation for an incredible year of learning and enrichment ahead.

The Gonzalez ACE family is coming together, and we’re just getting started!

First Day of ACE Coloring Fun at Sam Houston Elementary!

Our Sam Houston ACE students kicked off their first day with creativity, smiles, and plenty of COLOR!

As students settled into their new afterschool routines, they enjoyed some coloring fun while getting to know their ACE teachers, reconnecting with friends, making new ones, and beginning to build the welcoming ACE community they’ll be part of all year long.

The first day is just the beginning! We are looking forward to a 2026–2027 school year filled with academic support, exciting enrichment, hands-on learning, creativity, friendships, laughter, and lots of FUN!

It’s going to be an AMAZING year at Sam Houston ACE!

TOMORROW IS THE BIG DAY!

Tomorrow marks the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL for the 2026–2027 school year AND the FIRST DAY OF WISD ACE!

We are SO excited to welcome our ACE students back and begin another incredible year of learning, growing, creating, and having FUN beyond the bell!

When the regular school day ends, our ACE team is just getting started!

Throughout the school year, our amazing ACE staff will work alongside our students to help support their academic success through:

Homework Assistance – Providing students with additional time and support to complete assignments and strengthen classroom learning.

High Impact Tutoring – Delivering targeted academic support that builds upon the tremendous instruction already taking place during the regular school day.

Exciting Enrichment Opportunities – Giving students opportunities to explore new interests through STEM, fine arts, physical activity, technology, hands-on projects, college and career exploration, and so much more!

A Safe & Supportive Environment – Creating a place where students can build friendships, develop confidence, discover their talents, and feel supported as we nurture the whole child.

Our goal is simple: extend learning beyond the school day while creating experiences that make our students excited to be part of ACE!

To all of our ACE students joining us tomorrow—WE ARE READY FOR YOU!

The Weslaco ISD ACE Program would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Mr. Ron McVey for recognizing and supporting the incredible work taking place in our out-of-school time program.

Afterschool and summer learning are about so much more than extending the school day. They are about creating opportunities for students to continue growing academically, discovering new interests, building meaningful relationships, and developing the confidence and skills they need to succeed all in a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment.

Every day, our dedicated ACE team works tirelessly to ensure that learning continues long after the final bell rings. Through High Impact Tutoring, hands-on enrichment experiences, family engagement opportunities, college and career exploration, and immersive summer programming, our staff is committed to helping develop the whole child while making learning exciting and meaningful.

Mr. McVey took the time to recognize these efforts and commend our staff for their unwavering dedication throughout the school year and summer. His thoughtful gesture was greatly appreciated and served as a wonderful reminder that the work of afterschool professionals is seen, valued, and celebrated by members of our community.

Support like this means more than words can express. It encourages our staff, strengthens our mission, and reminds us that together, we are making a lasting impact in the lives of Weslaco ISD students and families.
