Although Hands-On Equations Fractions may be used with upper elementary students, 8th Graders can also benefit from this concrete representation of verbal problems involving fractional parts. In this image, the student has translated the verbal statement into its physical representation and is now ready to solve.

We extend our best wishes to Dr. Henry Borenson on his 81st birthday.

We asked him if he would share a brief message with the Borenson Math community. He said:

"I am grateful that the Creator has enabled me to have a very productive life, one in which I have been able to make a meaningful contribution to the field of mathematics education. The Hands-On Equations program, in particular, has brought much enjoyment and success to teachers and their students."

Removing a blue pawn from each side of the balance scale representation enables the student to visualize removing an x from each side of the equation. Here, this student is simplifying 5x + 2 = 2x + 14. We encourage all elementary teachers and principals to provide this valuable algebra learning experience to their elementary school students.
