🚨 EXTREME HEAT WARNING 🚨

An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for Rockingham County from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. today (Friday, July 3) and again from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 4.

🌡️ Dangerous heat index values up to 110° are expected. Heat-related illnesses can develop quickly in these conditions, especially for children, older adults, outdoor workers, and those without access to air conditioning.

Protect yourself and your loved ones:
💧 Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty
❄️ Stay in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible
☀️ Avoid prolonged time in direct sunlight
👕 Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing
⏰ If you must be outdoors, limit strenuous activity to the early morning or evening
👨‍👩‍👧 Check on elderly relatives, neighbors, and anyone who may be vulnerable to the heat
🚗 Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle, interior temperatures can become deadly within minutes.

Know the warning signs of heat-related illness:
⚠️ Heat Exhaustion: Heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache, and cool, clammy skin.
🆘 Heat Stroke: High body temperature, confusion, loss of consciousness, hot dry skin or excessive sweating. Call 911 immediately if someone is experiencing heat stroke.

If you’re celebrating Independence Day outdoors this weekend, plan ahead, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and stay hydrated.

🎆 Fireworks Safety Reminder for Independence Day 🇺🇸

As we celebrate America's 250th anniversary, please remember that safety should be part of every Fourth of July celebration.

Consumer fireworks sold in North Carolina should be legal to purchase and use. However, any firework that launches into the air or explodes is illegal under North Carolina law.

With the recent hot, dry weather, fireworks can quickly spark grass, brush and structure fires. Take extra precautions to protect your family, neighbors and community.

✅ Follow all local and state laws
✅ Keep a bucket of water or garden hose nearby
✅ Light fireworks only on a hard, non-combustible surface such as pavement or concrete
✅ Never light fireworks in dry grass, fields or wooded areas
✅ Keep children and pets at a safe distance
✅ Never relight a malfunctioning firework
✅ Soak used fireworks in water before disposing of them

A few moments of caution can prevent a devastating fire. Celebrate responsibly and help keep Rockingham County safe this Independence Day.

As temperatures rise and cookouts become more common, remember that grilling safety is essential for protecting your family, friends and property.

Before firing up the grill:

✅ Keep grills at least 10 feet away from homes, decks and overhangs
✅ Never leave a grill unattended while cooking
✅ Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the grilling area
✅ Clean grease and fat buildup from grills and trays regularly
✅ Have a fire extinguisher nearby and know how to use it

According to the National Fire Protection Association, grills are involved in thousands of home fires each year. A few simple precautions can help keep your cookout safe and enjoyable.

Throughout the severe weather on Monday evening, the Rockingham County 911 Communications Center received 701 calls for service, relating to the weather. These calls were received between 6:20 p.m. and 10:45 p.m.

County-wide, we experienced numerous downed trees and thousands of power outages.

As of this morning, there were no road closures reported to Emergency Services as crews worked diligently following the storm to clear roadways as much as possible.

As of 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, more than 1,900 Duke Energy customers are still without power. Crews are actively working throughout the county to get service restored as quickly as possible.

Please remember to stay clear of any fallen power lines, as you do not know if it is charged, and if you encounter an intersection with non-functioning traffic lights, it should be treated as a 4-way stop.

Thank you to our first responders throughout the county for your rapid response to help our community clean up following the severe weather.

A great reminder with the chance of storms this afternoon that if you hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Please be safe while spending time outdoors this afternoon! 🌩️

When thunder roars, go indoors! Lightning can strike from miles away, even if it isn't raining yet. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck. Don't wait, find a sturdy building or a hard-topped vehicle immediately.
