Proud Trainer Moment.
Olivia has been riding with me for many years now. She’s officially an adult, headed off to do a year long mission in Africa soon, and only has a few months left with us! And I’m soaking it all up.

This week, she put the first ride on this 6yo Shire for me. She’s been diligently working our babies at home under supervision and helping bring them along. But this was her first “first ride”!

It’s amazing knowing we are creating such great horsemen and horsewomen here that can go out and not just ride, but train, and carry on the next generation.

This took years of careful training and preparation, putting her on all kinds of horses. And challenging her time and time again in ways that help develop the feel, timing, and patience needed for something like this.

You don’t become a good horseman overnight. But if you’re willing to put in the work? The reward is beyond imagination

First saddling for this 6yo Shire. No fuss to be had. Groundwork for the win.

One of the best things to do in life is be open minded. Coachable. Eager to learn.

Even if you’ve known horses for years. Even if you think you understand a concept or tool. Being open to saying “maybe I’m wrong” is the most valuable life skill you’ll ever have.

There is always more to learn. There is always room to grow. There are always new ways to do old things, and more than one way to do most things.

But if you are so firm in your beliefs that you never allow them to be challenged, what good is that?

The Samson Project is a 501c3 non profit that works right here at Jaks to help adults overcome trauma.

Samson started from something I've learned over and over again through years of working with people and horses: sometimes the horse isn't really the thing someone needs help with.

Sometimes it's the person sitting in the saddle.

The person who doesn't trust themselves anymore.

The person who has spent years carrying things they never should have had to carry.

The person who is struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, confidence, relationships, boundaries, or simply figuring out how to move forward.

The Samson Project was created to use the things we've learned through horses, horsemanship, and coaching to help adults who have experienced childhood trauma build healthier, more stable lives.

And it isn't riding lessons disguised as therapy.

Sometimes there's a horse involved. Sometimes we're sitting on a hay bale talking.
Sometimes we're working through a difficult conversation. Sometimes we're learning how to recognize patterns, set boundaries, regulate emotions, rebuild confidence, or simply believe that life can look different than it has before.

Horses are incredibly good teachers because they don't care about your past. They don't care what you've accomplished. They don't care what other people think of you. They respond to what you bring into the arena today.

And sometimes learning how to communicate with a 1,200-pound animal teaches you something about communicating with the people in your life, too.

JAKS will always be a place where people come to learn about horses.

But one of the things I'm most proud of is that we've also created a place where people can learn about themselves.

That's the heart of The Samson Project. Right now, we are actively seeking donors to help fund scholarships for people waiting to get help. If you are interested in learning more or giving, please visit thesamsonproject.org
