HOEEP GRADUATION // Last Saturday, WVC's Hispanic Orchard Employee Education Program (HOEEP) celebrated students who completed the Integrated Pest Management Technician program. WVC Agriculture professors Francisco Sarmiento and Frank Jr. Sarmiento-Torres presented certificates to 12 graduates from Tri-Cities, Othello, Wenatchee, Quincy, Royal City, and Mattawa at the ceremony in Kennewick.

WVC's IPM program trains students to identify and monitor common fruit tree pests, evaluate and understand pest damage and economic thresholds, and develop control strategies.

"Wenatchee Valley College continues to serve and provide these educational opportunities for the Latino workforce working in our Washington fruit industry, and related industries," said Professor Sarmiento-Torres. Both faculty members thank Jaime Barajas, Librado Mendez, and McDougall & Sons Fruit Company for offering classroom space for the course, and WVC leadership and staff for their support.

El sábado pasado, el Programa de Educación para Empleados Hispanos de Huertas (HOEEP) de WVC celebró a los estudiantes que completaron el programa de Técnico en Manejo Integrado de Plagas. Los profesores Francisco Sarmiento y Frank Jr. Sarmiento-Torres entregaron certificados a los 12 graduados de Tri-Cities, Othello, Wenatchee, Quincy, Royal City y Mattawa en la ceremonia en Kennewick.

El programa IPM de WVC capacita a estudiantes para identificar y monitorear plagas comunes, evaluar y comprender los daños y los umbrales económicos de las plagas y desarrollar estrategias de control efectivas.

"Wenatchee Valley College sigue atendiendo y brindando estas oportunidades educativas a la fuerza laboral latina que trabaja en la industria de la fruta de Washington y en sectores relacionados", comentó el profesor Sarmiento-Torres. WVC IN THE NEWS // WVC received an Educating Character Initiative (ECI) Capacity-Building Grant from Wake Forest University to support a community-centered planning initiative that focuses on leadership development, character education, belonging, and cultural understanding throughout North Central Washington.

The ECI grant will fund the “Indigenizing Leadership and Character Education” project, directed by Saxon Spillman, a WVC part-time instructor. Dr. María Morales-Sánchez, director of the El Corazón Teaching and Learning Center, is serving as the principal investigator of the project, and Lynn Palmanteer-Holder is the subject matter expert.  

“Indigenizing Leadership and Character Education” will establish a collaborative cohort of 30 participants, comprised of WVC staff, local leaders, and educators. Through workshops, community conversations, and collaborative planning, participants will plan and participate in four workshops focused on building understanding around leadership, Indigenous epistemology, tribal sovereignty, and their intersection with character education. The goal is to produce a shared toolkit of core values, recommendations for future programming at WVC, and a foundational grounding in tribal sovereignty and relations via the John McCoy (lulilaš) Since Time Immemorial: Tribal Sovereignty in Washington State (JMLSTI) curriculum.
