Yesterday, after four years of Great Race competition, and a very strong run, the flathead 6 engine had a catastrophic failure. Don and Liam were on the transit back from an excellent day of rallying (two 1 second stages!) and with very little warning, the engine let go. We have spoken to a metallurgist and all together, we determined that because it failed so quickly, and because of the nature of the wear and tear that vehicles face on the Great Race, the #1 connecting rod suddenly broke likely due to metal fatigue.

Sadly, this failure will end the journey of the Power Wagon on the 2018 Great Race. We would like to express our deepest thanks to everyone who has followed this page, supported our group, and helped us make the Great Race possible. Today is day #1 of planning something for next year's race.

Peter Brown, who is the driver of the Model A that we helped with a few times this race was kind enough to educate us on the proper way to eat our lobster. It was quite the experience! For most of us, this was our first time at a lobster bake, and it left is begging for more!

Day 4 - Burlington, VT to Gardiner Maine: Today, Jake and Jordan saw some beautiful sights and had a great day after dealing with an electrical issue in the morning. They were greeted by the "Welcome Wagon" pictured below, and by a crowd of people eager to show us a genuine Maine lobster bake.

Tomorrow Liam and Don will take the Wagon from Gardiner to Bangor.

Day 3 - Troy to Burlington, VT: Today we knew we were up for a challenge due to the mountains. Liam and Don were back in the Wagon today. They finished with just over a minute of penalties and they were very proud of that after a day of a lot of uncertainty.

Tomorrow we go from Burlington, VT to Gardiner, ME.

Alfred State students just finished work on Team #43's 1931 Model A. They had to drop the oil pan, remove some shredded cotter pins, adjust some shims, and re-assemble the engine in the pouring rain in the parking lot of our hotel in Troy. Everyone pitched in and we got it done. Experience like this is one of the reasons we love to help out on the Great Race.

Day 2 - Fairport to Troy: Today, Jake and Jordan took their first turn in the Wagon. They had a great day and learned a lot on their way from Central New York to the capital. In Troy, we took a trolley to dinner at a local brewery.

Tomorrow we go from Troy to Burlington.

Day 1 - Buffalo to Fairport: Today was a great first day of the Great Race! Don navigated for the first time (and did an excellent job!) And Liam drove. They made no wrong turns and finished with only a 58 second penalty for the whole day! Fairport had a spectacular turnout with thousands upon thousands of supporters, many of whom were cheering extra hard for the Alfred State Power Wagon! Our only issue came after the final check point of the day when the tow cable snapped and we started dragging the hook and tow assembly. We're trying to get a new cable and set up put together for tomorrow, but if we can't, we'll be about 50 lbs lighter tomorrow!

Tomorrow we go from Fairport to Troy!
