SCS Students ROCK the NWEA Tests!

While our Catholic faith was always at the forefront of all that our school accomplished, the core subjects were far from being neglected. In fact, in the spring nationally standardized testing program from NorthWest Evaluation Association (NWEA), our kindergarten through sixth grade students were the frontrunners in the subjects of Math and Reading, having attained the highest average test scores within the entire Diocese of Winona-Rochester. What an amazing accomplishment by these students and an acknowledgement of their God-given gifts!!!

In recognizing the contribution that our school has made to our parish and community, Ms. Woodring, shared the following, "Our parish and community have been greatly blessed to have had the honor of graduating almost 1700 students over the past 110 years. At times when other public or parochial schools have had to either close their doors or consolidate with other schools to remain viable, the leadership and members of St. Casimir Church have remained stalwart in their belief that a Catholic education for all is not only a gift, but a necessity. This in itself is amazing. To have continued this effort for 110 years is almost miraculous, and for this we are truly grateful."

Ms. Woodring then continued, "At this time, I would like to acknowledge the outstanding support from several families within our school community who have not only been members of St. Casimir's School themselves, but whose successive generations have also studied with the walls of our beautiful school." Calling foward representatives of the Jerome Dulas family (three SCS generations), Leon Chirpich (four generations), Lorna Stevermer Feist (four generations) and Ira Bushlack (five generations), certificates of honor were presented to all four families who had at least one child attending the school this year.

Our appreciation and congratulations go to these four families for their continuous, unbroken support of St. Casimir's School, it's philosophy and blessings.

During the recent graduation celebration Mass, several of our graduating class members received special awards. Receiving the President's Award for Educational Achievement for showing tremendous growth, improvement, commitment and intellectual development for learning in academics was Zoey Elg. Earning the President's Award for Educational Excellence by earning a grade point average of 90% or higher were four of the students, Clara Bushlack, Abigail Chirpich, Calvin Jewison and Gemma Woodring.

The final student award was the announcement of the recipient of the American Citizenship Award. In the words of presenter, Ms. Woodring, "This award recognizes America's youth for making positive contributions to the school or community by consistently possessing the strength of character to do what is right and exhibiting the behaviors of respect and positive attitude while displaying leadership qualities amongst their peers. I am pleased to announce that this year's recipient of the American Citizenship award is Abigail Chirpich."

Congratulations to all of these wonderful, young leaders!

Our church celebrated the graduation of the last SCS class on Sunday, June 3rd. In the words of our school administrator, Jinger Woodring, "Today, we celebrate not just the end of a school year, but the closing of a chapter in our school's history. You are the final class to graduate from St. Casimir's School, and your place in its history is important. You've spent this year learning what it means to become a saint--to be living examples of Christ's light in the world, to see the beauty and divine image of God in one another, and to walk humbly with Him. Though our building may now be permanently quiet and void of your exuberant energy, the spirit of this school will live on in you--in the choices you make, the love you share and in the light you carry into the world. Congratulations, St. Casimir's Class of 2025. You were--and always will be--something truly special and Very Good. May God bless you now and always."

With last week's student talent show and St. Paul field trip, I fell behind on honoring our teachers for National Teacher Appreciation Week--oops! With such a busy week behind us, we appreciate our teachers all the more for the efforts they put forth in making these events such successes! To round out our week of appreciation, we would like to extend our thanks to the two remaining teachers, Julia Gray and Thomas Schindler. With their unique teaching experiences, they have broadened the scope of learning for our students while still remaining true to the core elements. Thank you Mrs. Gray and Mr. Schindler for the gifts you are shared with our students!

Last Friday was a beautiful day for the end-of-the-year field trip for our students and staff to travel to St. Paul to visit the Minnesota Science Museum and the Cathedral of St. Paul. Although a really early start to the trip was necessary, the kids made sure to pack EVERY minute new sights and activities. With the museum as the first stop of the day, the students toured everything from the mummy station to butterflies, dinosaurs, sports and electricity activities. Their minds were filled with a whirl of experiences!

Following a picnic lunch, the group boarded the bus once again to travel the short distance to the Cathedral of St. Paul. Once inside the very beautiful church, they received a guided tour that not only covered the gorgeous and amazing church proper, but they were also given a "behind the scene" tour of the smaller chapels behind the main altar and learned additional facts about the saints they had been studying in Religion class. The kids were filled with both questions about the church itself, but also with answers to the many questions asked by the guide--their Catholic education was shining brightly! When they were later asked what their favorite part of the day was, the resounding answer was "the CATHEDRAL!" proving that the kids were just as impressed as the adults. The Cathedral tour was such an impactful experience to celebrate the ending of a very blessed year at SCS.

Day 3 of National Teacher Appreciation Week brings us to our second and third grade teacher, Melissa Calo. Ms. Calo comes to SCS from her home country of the Philippines, and her students have loved learning about that culture, even as they share American culture with her. Thank you, Ms. Calo, for sharing the Philippines with us!

For Day 2 of National Teacher Appreciation Week, we would like to send a HUGE thank you to Heather Tipton who instructs our kindergarten and first grade students. Mrs. Tipton can often be heard sharing her vocal skills in a very energetic style with her students, and they love it! These young students are very blessed to have a teacher with so much enthusiasm for teaching. Thank you, Mrs. Tipton, for sharing your gifts and talents with our students!
