The Construction Technology class this spring worked on building a deck for a family in the Kalona Community. Here are some photos of the finished product along with some photos of projects made in Advanced Construction Materials Process this year.

On Tuesday, students from Mid-Prairie were able to attend the Build My Future Career Expo at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids. They were able to explore a wide variety of career choices. A team of 5 also went up to compete in the Eastern Iowa Industry Skills Competition. The building team consisted of seniors Jacob Donaldson and Tucker Miller, juniors Landry Gingerich and Quinn Callahan and sophomore Elijah Statler. These boys finished 1st out of 12 teams in the building competition!

Over the past few weeks, the Mid-Prairie Construction Tech class has had the opportunity to work on a house for Riley and Hayley Hershberger of Kalona Realty, Inc. The students have had the opportunity to learn trim install, interior and exterior door installation. The doors were custom painted by Iowa Collision & Paint. David Murray from HomeWorks Remodeling spent time working with and teaching the students how to install cabinets that were purchased through Cabinet Works LLC in Wellman. We also got to meet with Zach Hardman about professional painting and the process that goes into prepping a house through finishing the interior. This project has been a great way to teach students real life skills that cannot be taught in within the classroom walls.

In December, students in the Advanced Construction Materials Process course got to meet with representatives of the Carl A Nelson company. They were able to learn about the trades industry, meet with representatives from the carpenter’s union, sheet metal workers union and members of the union of painters and allied trades. Students were able to tour the new facilities at the Middle School and East Elementary to see first-hand what the trades do and can offer.
