👽🐮🐯 THE ALIEN TIGER COW GAME

Everyone stands in a circle facing outward. On the shout of “alien, tiger, cow” (instead of 1, 2, 3), each kid picks a character — no talking, no planning — then jumps around to face the group.

👽 Alien — fingers up like antennas, lean in, “bee boo bee boo”
🐮 Cow — lean back, wiggle fingers like udders, “mooo”
🐯 Tiger — hands up claws out out, “roar”

The goal: everyone lands on the SAME one. It never happens on round 1 😅 We keep going until the whole group finally syncs up.

It started with one suggestion.

I was the zookeeper.

The animals had escaped.

(They may have been dinosaurs…honestly, that’s beside the point. 😝)

The room exploded into joyful chaos.

Then I said, “Freeze.”

One by one, I interviewed each character about what had happened. Without planning it, they built one incredible story together—adding details, accepting each other’s ideas, and making the scene richer with every answer.

That’s improv. Kids listening hard enough to catch every detail, imagining fast enough to keep up, and building on each other’s ideas instead of competing with them.

Moments like this I keep chasing every session — and I can’t wait for after-school classes to start again.

These clips have been sitting in my camera roll since the last day of school.

Summer camp started the very next week, and these moments got buried behind all the camp memories. But they’re too special not to share.

I was invited to lead an improv station during Epic Day of Unity. I hadn’t seen my after-school improv kids in several weeks, and they had no idea I’d be there.

Their reactions absolutely melted me. 🥹

One of my favorite parts of the day was watching so many students who had never experienced improv get a peek into what we do—making brave choices, laughing way too hard, and discovering that their ideas matter.

People ask why I make improv seem so special.

Because it is. 🤍

Every child deserves a place where they feel seen, celebrated, and free to be themselves.

Find the people who clap when you have a ridiculous idea instead of asking you to tone it down.

This comes from a famous study by George Land, who developed a creativity test for NASA in the 1960s to identify innovative engineers. He tested thousands of kids ages 4-5 and got the 98% number. Same kids at 10? Dropped. At 15? Dropped again. He talked about it in a well-known TED talk if you want to go down the rabbit hole.

This is exactly why improv matters so much to me. It’s not about performing or being funny. It’s a space where kids get to keep exercising that muscle — saying yes, making something from nothing, trusting a weird idea out loud — before the world convinces them not to.
