The spring OUW course “Reading and Writing Edith Wharton” read and discussed a play about Wharton and her friendship with Louis Bromfield. You have two chances to see a staged reading of the play, in Lenox at Wharton’s home The Mount on September 10, and closer to home in Provincetown at the Fine Arts Work Center on September 12. This surprising bond is at the heart of A Cultivated Friendship , a new play by John Dennis Anderson and Karen Vuranch. The playwrights will perform staged readings this September at the Mount and the Fine Arts Work Center.

Open University Instructor John Dennis Anderson will read his play "Beston" with Karen McPherson and Laura Scribner at Wellfleet Preservation Hall on Friday, July 25 at 7pm. This play replaces the reading of his play about Edith Wharton, originally planned, that was read and discussed in the OUW class "Reading and Writing Edith Wharton." "Beston" explores the perspectives of Henry Beston's wife Elizabeth Coatsworth and their daughter Kate Beston Barnes, both also accomplished writers, on the complicated author of "The Outermost House." On Saturday, Feb. 15, all are invited to a free reading at 2pm at the Truro Public Library of OUW Board member John Dennis Anderson's play "Beston," about the author of "The Outermost House" Henry Beston, his wife Elizabeth Coatsworth, and their daughter Kate Beston Barnes. Joining Anderson in the reading will be Karen McPherson as Coatsworth and Laura Scribner as Barnes. "Beston" is part of the Truro Playwright Collective's series of new play readings.
