Mission statement:

The Open University of Wellfleet aims to sustain and enrich intellectual life on the Outer Cape during the shoulder seasons. We offer courses to the public, for a modest fee, that celebrate the area's rich history and culture and draw on the talents and expertise of our residents. Our educational forum stresses collaborative learning, with lectures by instructors, directed disc

ussions, readings and participant contributions. Our classes welcome participants from all over Cape Cod to some of Wellfleet's most charming and accessible locations. The Spring 2015 classes will be held once a week for two hours from April through June at Wellfleet Preservation Hall, Wellfleet Library, or W.H.A.T. Course descriptions including dates, time and location are online. Courses will run with a minimum of ten and a maximum of seventeen participants.

The spring OUW course “Reading and Writing Edith Wharton” read and discussed a play about Wharton and her friendship with Louis Bromfield. You have two chances to see a staged reading of the play, in Lenox at Wharton’s home The Mount on September 10, and closer to home in Provincetown at the Fine Arts Work Center on September 12. This surprising bond is at the heart of A Cultivated Friendship , a new play by John Dennis Anderson and Karen Vuranch. The playwrights will perform staged readings this September at the Mount and the Fine Arts Work Center.
