WCLS Principal’s Newsletter, 2nd Wk, 9/20/26
This past Sunday marked the second week of the new school year at Wellesley Chinese Language School (WCLS).
Although our long-term classroom location has not yet been finalized, Sunday’s classes ran very smoothly thanks to the collective efforts of our teachers, parents, PTO members, and volunteers. I am especially grateful to our families for their understanding and cooperation with the parking arrangements. Everyone’s patience and consideration helped make both classes and student drop-off and pick-up run smoothly throughout the day.
Securing a stable location remains one of our most important priorities. We will continue working actively toward making a final decision for a suitable long-term home for WCLS as soon as possible. In the meantime, I sincerely appreciate the understanding, trust, and support that our families have shown during this transitional period.
This Sunday, our PTO held its first small fundraiser of the new school year—a dahlia sale. All of the flowers came from our own gardens and were grown, cut, and arranged by members of our school leadership team and PTO. The beautiful dahlias attracted enthusiastic support from our families as well as friends in the broader community.
One community friend particularly touched us. Although her child attended WCLS for only one year, she made a special trip to support the fundraiser after hearing about it. She donated $50 and even insisted on not taking any flowers. She is also a longtime friend of one of our key PTO members.
This small story reminded us that the meaning of her support goes far beyond the $50 itself. A school’s presence in the community is shaped not only by the institution, but also by every person who is part of it. The trust and commitment of our teachers, parents, PTO members, and volunteers—as well as the friendships, reputations, and community connections we build in our everyday lives—all help more people come to know and understand WCLS. This friend’s decision to come and support our school is a wonderful example of how personal relationships and trust can extend outward into the larger community.
And we hope these connections can reach even further. WCLS should be more than a place where children learn Chinese. We hope it can also be a place where Chinese and Chinese American families in Wellesley and surrounding communities come together, build relationships, and become more connected with the broader community around us.
This is one reason why having a stable physical home for our school matters so much. It provides a place where children can learn and grow, where parents can meet and connect, and where teachers, volunteers, families, and community friends can organize activities, share resources, and welcome others into our community.
As more families participate in our school, volunteer their time, engage in community activities, and build relationships with others through WCLS, we are doing more than sustaining a Chinese language school. Together, we are demonstrating the engagement, responsibility, and contributions of our Chinese and Chinese American community, helping others know us better and strengthening our community’s participation, visibility, and positive impact in Wellesley and the surrounding area.
That is why the participation of every teacher, parent, and volunteer matters. One person’s dedication can influence a family; one family’s trust can reach friends and neighbors; and as these connections grow, they create a stronger, more connected, and more engaged community.
We hope WCLS can continue to bring Chinese and Chinese American families together while also serving as a bridge between our community and the broader community we all call home.
