Founded in 1991 and formerly known as African Awareness Now (AAN), Wellesley African Students' Association (WASA) is a Cultural Organization in Wellesley College, (Wellesley, MA, U.S.A) which seeks to increase interest in and an awareness of issues pertaining to Africa and Africans in the Diaspora. WASA regularly puts up and hosts lectures, cultural events and panel discussions, and we encourage m

embers of the Wellesley College community, and the general public, particularly in the Greater Boston area, to attend these very informative, educative and entertaining events. WASA has bi-weekly meetings in Harambee House and the Slater International Center, and is open to all members of the college community. born and raised on the African continent),
2. Immigrants/Expats*/Third Culture Individuals(TCI’s/TCK’s) (i.e. born and raised on the African continent but spent years living somewhere other than the African continent,
3. First-Generation Africans (i.e. first in family tree to be born and raised outside of the African continent),
4. Those with interests in African affairs. This membership dynamic often provides three different POV’s regarding situations during WASA meetings about cultural, political and socio-economic issues affecting the African continent or people’s of the African continent and/or Africans in the diaspora.

*= the difference has to do with intention: immigrants stay while expats eventually leave. an immigrant is classically understood as a person who is staying permanently whereas expat derives from the verb “to expatriate,” which has more to do with leaving a homeland than settling in a new one.
