Under the clearest, brightest skies in years, 319 graduates celebrated the 157th Wellesley High School Commencement at Hunnewell Field on Friday afternoon! Not even the unseasonably warm weather could dampen the spirits of the graduates or the thousands of family members and friends cheering them on. Congratulations to all the graduates!

Graduation for the Class of 2026 is today at 5 p.m. at Hunnewell Field! The public is welcome to attend. Please note that traffic around the high school will be heavy, particularly between the hours of 4-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Those attending should consider carpooling and should refer to the parking information and maps, as well as heed any additional guidance from the police department. Congratulations to all 320 graduating seniors!

This morning, Janet Singer Applefield shared her powerful story with the WMS 8th graders about surviving the Holocaust as a little girl. Gustawa Singer was just four years old when her family first attempted to flee Poland to escape the N***s. After her baby sister died of illness, and with the family in constant danger, Gustawa’s parents believed the only way to save her was to give her up.

During the war she lived with a variety of caregivers – some family, some strangers – who spent years keeping her safe. Her mother and grandmother died in concentration camps, but her father survived. After they were reunited, she moved with him to New Jersey at age 11, gained a new American name, and began attending school for the first time. Her memoir, “Becoming Janet: Finding Myself in the Holocaust,” was published in 2024.

One of the lessons Applefield learned is that people who help others during difficult times can have an incredible ripple effect. “I think of the people who saved me,” she told the students. “They didn’t just save my life. They saved the lives of future generations.” After the speech, the students sang “Happy Birthday” to Applefield, who turns 91 tomorrow. She spent time afterward chatting with them and answering questions.

Congratulations to Wellesley High School Choral Director Dr. Kevin McDonald, who was surprised this afternoon with the CMA Foundation Music Teachers of Excellence Award! Dmac is one of 30 music educators nationwide who will receive this award over the next few days, just in time for Teacher Appreciation Week. Lauren Saracino, WPS Director of Performing Arts, presented the award during Dr. McDonald's class with the Rice Street Singers. Dmac's wife Michaela (in person), and son Connor (on the phone) were among those celebrating him this afternoon. Dr. McDonald was also named a finalist for the GRAMMY Music Educators Award in December, so he has had an outstanding year!
