SPOKES is a year-round adult education program consisting of work-based academics and job preparation skills offered through a contract between the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) Office of Adult Education and Workforce Development and the Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR). This program provides classes with daily activities that address academic skills and "soft skills" necessary for adults to pursue and retain gainful employment.

💼 Southeast Region Collaboration in Action!
On October 8, 2025, CDCs Joy Walker and Heather Tharp took time out of a busy meeting day to participate in an Interview Module update session with the Southeast Region team. The group focused on collaboration and development of new SPOKES modules designed to strengthen employability and workplace skills for our students. 👏
A special shoutout to Jared Cantrell from McDowell County, who facilitated the discussion and has shown outstanding leadership in moving this project forward! 🌟

⚖️ McDowell SPOKES Welcomes WV Legal Aid!
Earlier this week, our McDowell County SPOKES class had the opportunity to hear from West Virginia Legal Aid! Attorney Matt McGrady and paralegal Carey Flannigan joined us to share important information about the free and low-cost legal services available to the public — including special support for TANF recipients. 💼
They discussed how Legal Aid can help with housing, family law, benefits, and other everyday legal challenges that many people face. Our students were highly engaged, asking great questions and learning how these resources could make a real difference in their lives. 🙌
By the end of the session, students felt empowered and informed, excited to know that help is available right here in West Virginia. A huge thank-you to WV Legal Aid for visiting and supporting our community! 💙
