PARENTS:

Next week, Mrs. Jessica (school-based therapist from Families, Inc) and I (Mr. Hicks) will discuss Safe vs Unsafe Touch with all grades. We will be discussing the "Swimsuit Rule" for what is unsafe touch. We will not be teaching children about the names of body parts. We will not be describing or encouraging any discussion on sexuality or sexual acts and will make everything age appropriate. You will find below the videos to be shown to each class for you to watch, the slideshow that we will use during the discussion, and the tips for you to talk to your own child about this very important topic and why it is so important to have that conversation with your child as they get older. I have taken all the content for the children out of the tips I'm giving to you, only cutting out the stuff that is meant for parents and not for children. If you have any questions about the content, please send me an e-mail or call the school.

This week, our character word is citizenship! We are discussing how citizenship is our most basic American right because it is the right to have rights. The basic rights and freedoms protected by the comes with being a citizen. In exchange for those rights and freedoms, we have a responsibility to respect authority and obey laws, even when we may not agree with them.

This is a little late, but this week we discussed FAIRNESS. Fair means everyone receives what they deserve, earn, or need. It is important to remember that FAIR does not mean EQUAL. Equal means that everyone receives the same thing. Sometimes, the two are the same. Sometimes, the two are very different. In life, we should aim to always be fair, even if sometimes it means that everything is not equal.

This week, our character word is COMPASSION. We focus on compassion's two parts: showing concern for other people's misfortunes AND to wish you could help them. The first part is showing sympathy (which as you build your emotional intelligence can become empathy). The second part is moving from an emotional bystander to a proactive emotional supporter.
