Four Chicago-area hospitals have closed or announced plans to close labor and delivery units this month alone, the latest in a years-long retreat from maternal care around the region that is leaving families farther from the nearest place to give birth.
The latest announced closure came last week as South Side safety-net hospital Roseland Community Hospital said it would suspend labor and delivery at the end of the month.
As a level two perinatal hospital, Roseland must provide access to obstetricians, neonatal neurology, anesthesia and other services 24/7, 365 days a week, but in all of 2025, Roseland saw only 105 deliveries, fewer than one every three days.
Roseland was one of the few South Side hospitals still offering labor and delivery, beyond the larger University of Chicago Medical Center and Advocate Trinity Hospital. Other hospitals on the South Side and in the south suburbs that have closed obstetrics care, or closed completely, in recent years include Jackson Park Hospital, Holy Cross Hospital, St. Bernard’s Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Advocate South Suburban Hospital and West Suburban Medical Center.
