The 8th Grade art classes are making using layers of different materials and combining text and images to fit their chosen theme related to identity. I can’t wait to see how these turn out and have already been so impressed by the creativity!

Over 500 entries were received for this year's county-wide UCPS Holiday Card Contest, and two artists from Weddington Middle are Top Ten Finalists! Seventh grader Evie Frain (second image) and eighth grader Kathryn Grace (first image) will be recognized for their designs in a virtual celebration this Thursday at 6:00pm. The celebration will not be viewable to the public, but the winner will be announced at this event and online shortly after. Stay tuned to see if a Weddington Wildcat takes home the first place prize, and congratulations to both of these talented students!

• Ava Lanzy Wins First Place in the North Carolina Aviation Art Contest •
We have some incredible news about a Weddington Middle student artist. Congratulations to Seventh Grader Ava Lanzy, who won First Place in the North Carolina Aviation Art Contest for the Intermediate Age Group. Hundreds of students across the state entered this contest, and work was judged based on creativity, technical quality, and depiction of the theme of “A Friendlier World with Air Sports.” Ava used brush pen markers to complete her drawing. Her work will be featured in the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, and will be entered to compete in the National Aviation Art Contest. Please join us in congratulating this incredible artist!

Students aimed for realistic and smooth blends of color on the pumpkins with a focus on color mixing and value changes. Pen and any additional features besides two pumpkins was optional - it’s wonderful to see the creativity!

Let’s talk about these sixth grade artists!! My first term students blew me away with this Van Gogh-inspired Impressionist Sunflowers project that they made using only the three primary colors (I only gave them red, blue and yellow paint!) They also did most of this from home while tuning into live classes. I am so proud of their hard work that absolutely paid off!
