For 125 years, Southwestern Oklahoma State University has grown alongside Weatherford, evolving from a small school established to prepare teachers into a comprehensive university serving students across Oklahoma and beyond.

SWOSU is marking the milestone throughout 2026 with a university-wide anniversary campaign celebrating the students, faculty, staff, alumni and supporters who have shaped the institution since its beginning.

The university was established March 8, 1901, when the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature authorized the creation of the Southwestern Normal School. The institution was originally authorized to provide two years of training for public school teachers, along with preparatory work for students who were not yet ready for college-level study. The first classes were in 1903.

REMINDER there are two weeks left to join us at Southwestern Oklahoma State University for the first Music Major for a Day event in the fall semester on Wednesday, October 7, 2026! 🎵

Whether you’re thinking about majoring in music, interested in performing, or just want to experience what life as a music student is like, this day is for you!

✨ Choose the experience that works for you:
🎼 Attend the full-day event from 9:30 AM–5:00 PM
🎺 Or join us for the OkMEA Round 1 Clinic at 3:00 PM only!

Students attending should bring their instruments 🎷🎻🎺 so they can participate and make the most of the day!

You’ll have the opportunity to:
🎵 Learn about studying music at SWOSU
🎓 Meet music professors & current students
🎶 Participate in ensembles
🍽️ Enjoy FREE lunch for full-day participants

SWOSU has spent 125 years on the Hilltop, and our new university-wide anniversary campaign begins today!

Generations of Bulldogs have shaped Southwestern since 1901. Our new anniversary website brings together stories from that history, the meaning behind the new 125th anniversary identity and information about commemorative merchandise coming later this month.
