August 17th is "I love my feet" day! And, at the Mature Driver Program, we know feet are essential to get you to where you need to be! This week we will be discussing body mechanics and giving you a few ideas to help you take care of your body, ensure proper driving positing, and celebrate the uniqueness that makes you, YOU! So, starting from the bottom to the top, here are some tips to ensure proper foot position next time you get behind the wheel:
- Always press the pedal with the ball of your foot, not your toes or the arch.
- Rest your right heel directly in front of the brake, for a heel-toe pivot while driving.
- Sit far enough back so your ankles do not fully compress when you fully press the pedals
- Prioritize solid shoes and avoid flip flops and high heels while driving so they do not slip behind the pedals
- Preform ankle rotations and toe points when at stops to improve circulation.
Taking care of your body is just as important as taking care of your vehicle. Prioritize your health and safety when on the road.

Knee-d to be somewhere important? Your KNEES can get you there!

- Raise the seat base so your hips slightly higher than or level with your knees.
- Move the seat so your knees are never bent at a tight, rigid 90-degree angle while resting.
- Pull over safely every 1 to 2 hours to stand up and walk around.
- Stand on one leg at a rest stop and gently pull your ankle to your glute to lengthen tight muscles.
- Keep at least 2" between your thighs and the steering wheel to have enough clearance while driving.
