Sports Class Nationals - Friday Pilots’ Meeting Report, May 17, 2024
It rained last night and it’s raining this morning. At 8 am, CD Jon Lubon texted the out-of-town contestants that they didn’t have to come to the Pilot’s Meeting. CM Linda Murray said she was glad we had a great day yesterday and reminded the crowd that the Air Force Museum would be a good place to visit. The museum is always adding new exhibits, it’s free and maintained by the Air Force. John L thanks Linda for a great pork chop dinner last night. Ground Crew Chief, Dick Holzwarth was thanked for an excellent launch yesterday. They calculated the average age of the ground crew was 72! Tow Pilot Chief, Larry Kirkbride, apologized for all the knots in the ropes. They ropes are brand new and CCSC is using a different manufacturer. It was suggested that the pilot’s try to do semi-soft releases. We had 8 knots within a foot of the end of the rope in 21 tows. Francois Pin was third and told us a little about his flight. Jared Granzow was second but stayed in Columbus today. First Place was Henry Retting and gave a detailed report on his flight. He carefully calculated that the day was going to be better later but end at 5:30 pm. So, he subtracted 2.5 hours and came up with a start of 3 pm. Subtracted another ½ hour for good measure and started around 2:30 pm. The gate opened at 2:10 pm. Henry caught up with Jared but detoured to a cloud street two miles off course. That really helped him, but Jared took the straight-line approach and was rewarded with having to perform a 1500’ AGL save. The email scoring system worked great. Once you emailed your score, immediately you got an email confirmation and as soon as you refreshed the scoring page your score popped up! John L complimented our 14-year-old scorer, Jack Derrickson, for the quick job of adjusting scores with the help of fellow club member and programmer of the scoring system, Guy Byars. Jack practically lives at the gliderport and is our assistant facility manager as well as our resident Condor Glider Flight Simulator trainer for our instructors. Jack is also taking a lot of photos of the contest. Thanks Jack! The weather doesn’t look good for the next few days, 50% chance of rain and very narrow dewpoint temperature spreads. Finally, a few of the grid squads’ names were announced – A will be known as The Avengers, B will go by Screaming Banshees, and C is left to beat those handles. Maybe Cosmic Challengers!

Help Save the Boulder, Colorado Airport
The City of Boulder is actively considering closing the Boulder airport. This would be the end of the 160-member Soaring Society of Boulder as well as the local commercial glider operation Mile High Gliding. It would be a huge blow to soaring in the Mountain West and nationwide.

I hope I can count on your support to add your name to our petition to keep the Boulder airport open. It takes less than a minute! Please also send it to your local clubs.
