Why Does North Carolina Call Him a Criminal?

He’s just seven and like all children, he’s mischievous and adores a flower.
Amos “stole” this daffodil, but fortunately, our neighbors are generous.
A child in another county wasn’t so lucky.
Waiting for the school bus, a kindergartener helped himself to a tulip.
Charges were filed.
He was appointed an attorney (Julie Boyer) and though she clarified this happened ten years ago, the law remains exactly the same in 2021 as it was written in 1979.
The state of North Carolina has the youngest specified age for juveniles of all the states and all the countries in the world.
At age six, you can be taken to court and he was.
The homeowner could have been kind, but she called the police.
The police didn’t have to file charges, but they did.
Court counselors could have dismissed the charges, but they said no.
The DA could have dropped the charges, but he didn’t.
When the trial began for the charge of damages to real property, the attorney explained to the child’s mother that she would be unable to talk with her about her son’s case.
In fact, NC demanded that he take part in his own defense.
The little boy who quietly colored a picture and whose feet didn’t yet reach the floor.
Fortunately, the judge threw out the case.
Judge Jay Corpening (not the judge of that case) scolded the state of North Carolina.
He asked: “Should a child that believes in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy be making life-altering decisions?”
Governor Roy Cooper has recommended raising the age to eleven years old and for now, we wait.
We wait on the NC Conference of District Attorneys, the NC Sheriffs' Association and the North Carolina Association of Chiefs of Police to take a stand on this legal insanity.

At a Special Called Meeting on Tuesday, March 16, 2021, the Haywood County Board of Education voted to offer in-person learning five days per week for students in grades six through twelve. This option begins on Tuesday, March 23, 2021. The school system will continue to provide an in-person learnin
