History

DePaul Catholic High School was founded in 1956 by the Sisters of Charity on the second floor of Holy Spirit Elementary School in Pompton Plains, New Jersey. McHugh, set about the task of building a new school located on Van Houten’s farm in Wayne, New Jersey. The original building was one story, fourteen classrooms, one cafeteria, and one gym, with one practice all-purpose field in the

back the size of a normal football field. After completion of the original building in 1959, a two-story addition was completed in 1962. An additional renovation, which began in 2002, upgraded the facility by adding air conditioning, and modern technology, and was accompanied by a major upgrade to the existing convent that now houses seven classrooms, a music room and an art room. Since 2013, DePaul Catholic has expanded/upgrades facilities to include a Student Information Commons, A school-wide Security System, and a new Admissions and Advancement Suite. In addition, upgraded wireless technology was added throughout the school and campus. In 2010, DePaul Catholic instituted an 8th Grade Prep Program. Currently, the High School and the Prep, host approximately 600 students from 70 towns and 8 countries, and it is this diversity that makes DePaul a vibrant and dynamic educational environment. Mr. Dalton Friend joins DePaul Catholic as a Physical Education Teacher. Mr. Friend earned his degree from DeSales University in 2018. Before becoming a Spartan, he spent six years at Don Bosco Prep, where he served in both the Campus Ministry and Admissions offices. He also brings seven years of coaching experience in Track & Field at Don Bosco Prep and Delbarton School.

Outside of school, Mr. Friend enjoys spending time with his wife and their daughter, Luna Rose, whom they welcomed in July 2025.

As he begins his first year at DePaul Catholic, Mr. Friend is excited to serve as a mentor and positive role model for our students. He looks forward to bringing a fun and relatable approach to physical education, building meaningful relationships with his students, and helping them feel at home within the DePaul community.

Most of all, he is excited to become part of our faculty and the Spartan family.

Today we celebrate the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

As we begin a new school year at DePaul Catholic, Mary’s example is a beautiful reminder for all of us to lead with faith, humility, and trust in God’s plan.

Just as Mary said “yes” to God and trusted the path He had for her, we pray that our students will have the courage to follow where God leads them, grow in their faith, and use their gifts to make a difference in the lives of others.

May Mary continue to watch over and guide our entire DePaul Catholic family throughout this school year.

We are excited to welcome Jill Long as our new Guidance Counselor here at DePaul Catholic!

Jill brings a wealth of experience from several school districts and most recently from St. Gerard in Paterson. Her passion for helping students grow academically, socially, and personally aligns perfectly with our commitment to forming young men and women of faith, character, and purpose.

Outside of school, Jill is a proud parent of two middle schoolers, and keeps life lively with a house full of animals!

She is looking forward to a wonderful school year, building relationships, and becoming an important part of the DePaul Catholic community!

Today, our Spartans are officially back home! From familiar faces and new friendships to busy hallways, full classrooms, and the excitement of a brand-new year, DePaul Catholic is once again filled with the energy that makes our school so special.

There’s something extra special about the start of this school year as we proudly celebrate 70 years of DePaul Catholic.
