OFFENSE VS. DEFENSE
“Which is better – offense or defense? “The best defense is a good offense” is something we have all heard many times. This might be true against a person who isn’t trained in martial arts or boxing, but it is a foolish statements otherwise. The best offense is a good offense, and the best defense is a good defense.
Many world class fighters I have known believe a good defensive fighter has a slight advantage since every time an offense is initiated an opening is created. A good defensive fighter will take advantage of that. Furthermore, the person attacking usually moves into the opponent increasing the impact of the defender’s strike. As an example, we’ve all seen a boxer step into a punch and instantly get knocked out.
Finally, a person who trains regularly can have pretty good offensive skill is about a year or two. It takes many years to build a good defense. It’s the same in all sports—a good defense keeps you in the game long enough to execute your offense effectively.
These two people did a lot of research on the topic.

Meditation Walk for April 19, 2026
Step into the spirit of the Warrior Monk and join us for a powerful Meditation Walk with the Bo Staff—a moving meditation that blends focus, strength, and stillness.
We’ll gather in Malvern, PA (exact location to be announced) and enter the practice together: walking with intention, breathing with awareness, and learning to move fluidly and efficiently with the staff. This is more than a walk—it’s an embodied meditation. The staff becomes both anchor and guide, supporting balance, relaxation, and deep presence.
In past walks, participants have described the experience as grounding, energizing, and unexpectedly transformative. You’ll learn:
• How to walk efficiently and confidently with a Bo staff
• Techniques for using the staff as a tool for meditation and relaxation
• How the staff can serve as a powerful archetype for personal growth and centered living
Group size is intentionally limited to preserve the quality and focus of the experience. Waiting list will be established and notice to participants will be made within two weeks of event.
Date: April 19, 2026
Rain Date: April 26, 2026
Time: 10:00 AM (approximately 1–1.5 hours)
Location: Malvern, PA (site TBD)
Cost: $20 per person
Adults Only. NO MARTIAL ARTS EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. GREAT FOR PARENTS, FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS, AS WELL AS NKS STUDENTS.
A limited number of staffs will be available to borrow. However, many participants choose to purchase their own, as the practice often becomes something they want to continue—and the staff itself frequently evolves into a meaningful symbol of personal development.

Dr. Gyi asked me to reach out to those of you who have been less active and spending a lot of time on Facebook. He encourages you to attend the seminar on February 21st. He emphasized the importance of staying connected to your roots and reengaging with the community that you have been such an important part of. Please take his advice to heart. See you there. DJN

I came across these pictures of my Boxing trainer Marty Feldman. One of the hardest punchers I've ever seen. He even broke my nose once when I wasn't listing to him during a training season when we were boxing. I listened to him after that.
Part of my linage and my student's linage go back to him. That's why you people know how to punch properly. He passed away nine years ago. His slogan was "Punch Like a Pro".
