Listening for beginning sounds is an important early literacy skill—and today our little learners practiced it through interactive story time! 📚🐛

As we explored the book together, children learned that the beginning sound is the very first sound we hear in a word. We pointed to the caterpillar on the cover and listened closely to the word caterpillar to hear the /k/ sound at the beginning. Then we made connections by finding other words that start with the same sound, like cat!

Throughout the story, children practiced identifying beginning sounds in familiar words, building strong foundations for future reading and language development through playful, engaging learning.

Skills learned during this activity:

• Early phonemic awareness
• Letter-sound recognition
• Listening and auditory discrimination
• Vocabulary development
• Memory and recall
• Turn-taking and participation
• Language and communication skills
• Critical thinking and word connections
• Confidence in expressive speech

Little hands exploring big textures 🎨✨ Today the Nest enjoyed a mess-free bubble wrap painting experience, using their hands to press, squish, and move colors across the paper while exploring sensory play and early cause-and-effect learning.

Bubble wrap offers fantastic, low-cost sensory exploration for infants, stimulating touch, hearing, and motor development. Secure large sheets to the floor for a crawling runway, wrap it around blocks for textured building, or tape it over a box for a kicking station.

Through this activity, our 10- and 11-month-olds are developing:• Fine motor skills through grasping, pressing, and patting• Hand-eye coordination while exploring movement and color placement• Sensory processing through varied textures, sounds, and visual input• Cause-and-effect understanding as they see their movements create marks and hear bubbles pop• Tactile exploration using hands and fingers to investigate different sensations• Core strength and balance during reaching, crawling, and shifting positions• Bilateral coordination by using both hands together during play• Early creativity and self-expression through open-ended art exploration• Cognitive development through curiosity, experimentation, and problem-solving• Focus and attention span while engaging in a hands-on sensory experience• Language development as teachers describe textures, colors, and actions during play• Social-emotional development by building confidence and independence through exploration ✨

The smallest moments create the biggest impact. 💛

When teachers truly know their students, learning becomes meaningful, exciting, and personal. What started as a simple Pokémon conversation turned into a customized homework activity that made one little learner genuinely excited to practice at home.

At Peacock Learning Academy, we believe connection comes before curriculum because when children feel seen, understood, and valued, their love for learning grows naturally.

Now THAT’S what sets our teachers apart here at Peacock! ❤️
