Electric Storm in a Bottle with Static Sparks

The kind of rainy day fun that’s better than cartoons.

Ingredients:
- 1 clear plastic bottle with cap (16–20 oz)
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tablespoon silver or white glitter
- Few drops blue or purple food coloring
- 1 Alka-Seltzer tablet (or similar effervescent tablet)
- Wool cloth or balloon (for static charge)
- Optional glow-in-the-dark paint or glitter
- 1 spoon or stir stick for mixing

Directions:
Start by coloring the water with a few drops of food coloring in a small cup, stirring until it's just right. Next, pour the colored water into the bottle until it's halfway full, then gently add the vegetable oil on top, followed by a sprinkle of glitter. After letting the layers settle, you can create some static charge by rubbing the bottle with a wool cloth or a balloon from your hair. Then, break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into pieces and drop one into the bottle before quickly screwing on the cap. Watch as the bubbles rise and the glitter dances, bringing your electric storm to life! If you want to watch the magic again, just give it a gentle shake or recharge that static with a little more rubbing.

Make a memory today, not just a mess.

Kids think these glowing flowers are MAGIC… ✨

Parents say their kids can’t stop watching them glow.

If you have kids at home, this is a fun activity.

Here’s how to make it step by step.

Ingredients:

paper plates

food coloring

dish soap

oil

glitter

Steps:

Step 1
Cut paper plates into flower shapes

Step 2
Mix food coloring with a little dish soap

Step 3
Brush the colors onto the petals and add glitter

Step 4
Turn off the lights and watch them glow

Kids always react differently to this one.
I’m curious which color mix would look best 🌈

Happy to see our DIY Spring sensory bottles back on the shelf for Roo to explore! 🌧️🌼🌿🌷🐞🔍
Bottle contents (from left to right)
Rain bottle 🌧️
I used a mixture of water and clear PVA glue with white Pom poms, blue sequins and silver glitter. Play around with the amount of water to PVA and add more glue for a slower effect and more water for a faster effect!
Spring flowers 🌸
This one is just water and some artificial flowers I found at a craft store. That’s it!
Insect discovery bottle🐞🌿
I used grass clippings from my garden (spread them out on a tray first to let any little minibeasts fly/crawl away) before bottling and adding toy bugs and artificial flowers. (you can use fake grass too if you have it. I will change out the grass every so often when it starts to dry up and I’ll pop the grass I take out into our bird nest materials holder for the birds to use up 😊)
