This summer we are offering Michigan certified concealed pistol license (CPL) classes to all active and retired Law Enforcement Officers for only $70. On top of that we are also offering the same discounted price to their family members.
● Yes, being licensed through MCOLES supersedes the authority of a standard Michigan CPL while in Michigan. So why would a Law Enforcement Officer need a CPL?
● Being active or retired MCOLES certified makes you eligible for an exempt Michigan CPL. An exempt CPL by itself gives you the authority to conceal carry the same places you can under MCOLES while in Michigan.
● This is beneficial if you find yourself in a situation where you no longer are sponsored by your MCOLES agency (change of career, layoffs, termination, certain forms of forced leave and investigations, etc.).
● The exempt status on your CPL will never change once it is added.
● The exempt CPL is also beneficial when you are traveling out of Michigan. When traveling out of state with MCOLES under LEOSA you are restricted to the standard concealed carry laws of that state. You can protect yourself with more carry freedom out of state under LEOSA when you combine it with an exempt CPL.
● Many also do not realize that if you are carrying out of state under LEOSA you technically by law are not authorized to carry in any federal or state parks. Adding an exempt CPL to your status allows you to do so legally.
● For those that are retired Law Enforcement Officers realize that they must renew their LEOSA status every year. A Michigan CPL is renewed every 5 years.
