Laurelwood Community Preschool Cultivating Creativity and Critical Thinking. Inspired by Reggio Emilia's philosophy of ECE we striv

Laurelwood Community Preschool is an innovative school created by a group of educators who are inspired with a strong image of the child in mind. Laurelwood is situated on a beautiful, wooded one-acre site in a house that has been renovated to meet 5-star licensing standards. Our philosophy embraces creativity, individuality, collaboration, nature, and freedom for children to be the leaders of the

ir own learning. An emergent, project-based curriculum inspires a context for cultivating creativity and critical thinking skills with a focus on the expressive arts and natural sciences. Children’s interests, ideas, and questions about the world create a launching point for in-depth studies and investigations where literacy, mathematics, and science are woven into their experiences. We believe it is far more important for children to learn how to think than to be told what to think.

✨ Magnolia Graduation 2026 ✨

This past Saturday, we celebrated a truly special group of children as they graduated from our Magnolia classroom. While graduation is always bittersweet, it was also a beautiful opportunity to reflect on the incredible journey these children have been on throughout the year.

At Laurelwood, our curriculum is inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, where learning begins with the children. Rather than following a predetermined theme, our teachers carefully observe, listen, and wonder alongside the children, allowing their interests to guide our investigations.

This year's class became captivated by cooking and dramatic play. What began as children preparing pretend meals for one another soon grew into a year-long food study filled with research, creativity, collaboration, and meaningful learning across every developmental domain. The highlight of their work was something they are incredibly proud of—their very own class cookbook! Each child helped create it, and every family received a professionally bound copy to treasure for years to come.

Our graduation celebration also served as an exhibition of the many projects the children explored throughout the year, showcasing the countless ways they expressed their ideas through the "hundred languages" of children.

Their beautiful creations included:
🌈 Cookbook Covers created with real cooking spices and noodles
⛺ Multimedia Tent Structure
🌳 Fallen Tree Rainbows
🎨 Collaborative Mural with Tempera & Liquid Watercolors
🌈 Rainbow Mixed Media Collage
🤝 Friendship Collaborative Project
🪵 Louise Nevelson-Inspired Wooden Sculptures
🧶 Community Weaving
🍃 Watercolor Leaf Resist
🔴 Yayoi Kusama Dot Art
✨ A reimagined Bicycle Wheel Chandelier

These projects are so much more than art. They represent curiosity, problem-solving, collaboration, perseverance, and the joy of learning together.

To our Magnolia graduates—we are so proud of the kind, creative, capable, and curious children you have become. Thank you for sharing your ideas, your laughter, and your hearts with us. We know you are ready for kindergarten, and we can't wait to see all the wonderful things you'll accomplish.

Congratulations, Class of 2026! 🎓💚

🎶 Exploring the Language of Music! 🎶

Music is so much more than singing songs—it's another language children use to express themselves, communicate, and make sense of the world around them.

Our preschool friends have been exploring rhythm, sound, and movement through hands-on musical experiences! They investigated different beats using their hands, rhythm sticks, shook and tapped tambourines, and even had the opportunity to strum ukuleles. As they experimented with each instrument, they listened closely to the unique sounds they created and discovered how changing the rhythm could change the music.

These joyful experiences help develop listening skills, coordination, creativity, self-expression, and confidence—all while having so much fun!

We can't wait to see where their musical discoveries lead next. 🎵💚
