W-SR Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS)

We had the opportunity to take 18 eighth grade students on a career exploration visit to Iowa State University College of Health and Human Sciences on Monday. Students toured the Student Innovation Center, participated in a consumer sensory taste panel, toured the fashion design and pattern making labs, observed children in the Child Development Laboratory school, learned about Family and Consumer Sciences Education and opportunities in kinesiology. Thank you to Jane Jensen Hoegh Landon Calderwood and Brandon Schutte for a well planned interactive day showcasing the wide range of career opportunities.

On Tuesday, our culinary team competed at the Iowa ProStart Invitational in Des Moines. With just 60 minutes and only two gas burners, they created an elevated three-course meal consisting of an appetizer, entrée, and dessert — with every component made completely from scratch.

Their menu included:
• Appetizer: Stuffed Zucchini Involtini
• Entrée: Seared Sirloin Steak over Cheese Tortellini
• Dessert: Chocolate Hazelnut Mousse with Raspberry Sorbet

The team received incredible feedback from judges, whom are professional chefs from across the state of Iowa, and ended up taking third place!

These ladies worked tirelessly to prepare for this moment. What an amazing way to set the tone for future ProStart teams at W-SR!

We would also like to wish the team from Cedar Rapids Prairie High School the best of luck as they travel to Baltimore in April to represent Iowa at the National ProStart Invitational. We’ll be cheering you on!

FCCLA/ Clover Power Ambassadors (4-H) led their first virtual cooking class yesterday afternoon. They did a great job talking about healthy snacks and making trail mix with our virtual learners.

High school FCCLA members Abby Angell and Mabel Reicherts handcrafted dog toys for their chapter service project. They had the opportunity to personally donate and distribute the toys to the dogs at Cedar Bend Humane Society. Great work Abby and Mabel!

What an amazing day bringing together 24 middle school students and FCS teachers representing 5 different schools (New Hampton, Denver, Wapsie Valley, North Polk and W-SR Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) for the first ever Kids Feeding Kids Kitchen Lab. Participants learned about the issue of food insecurity and used their culinary skills to take action. Students worked fiercely to prepare and pack 189 servings of protein rich mac and cheese that will be disrupted to local families.

Chef Diane from Kids Feeding Kids and I are prepped and ready for the first ever Middle School Kids Feeding Kids Kitchen Lab tomorrow. Students from 5 middle schools in Iowa will gather to learn about food insecurity and then prepare and pack meals for local food insecure families served through the Waverly-Shell Rock United Way.

We kicked off FCCLA week with 19 middle school and several high school members competing in District STAR Events! Onto the State Leadership Conference for all of our members! Advisors were busy judging and didn't get many pictures today.

Supper plans? Head on over to the Waverly Pizza Ranch tonight from 5-8 pm. FCCLA members will be bussing tables to earn money to attend leadership conferences.

FCCLA members are selling Florida Fresh Strawberries! What a great way to support members earning money for service project and leadership conferences! Contact Advisors Kristie Kuhse or Emma Poppe or your favorite FCCLA member to place an order. Strawberries arrive the week of Februrary 23. Orders due Feb. 11.

WSR MS FCCLA members took the lead in writing grants, asking for donations from local businesses and involved their peers, siblings, parents, teachers and even grandparents to make our Ignite the Spirit Meal Bundle a huge success!

We prepared and packaged 150 meals that went to the Waverly-Shell Rock Area United Way Holiday Cheer program and families in our community. Special thanks to the businesses that helped support our service project: Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation, Iowa Select Farms, Waverly HyVee, Martin Brothers Distributing, Kwik Star, Nestlé and Thrivent. Your help made this project amazing!
