Your child is deep in conversation in Spanish and then suddenly English. You think: are they forgetting it? Are they regressing?

Here's the truth: what you just witnessed is called code-switching. And it is a sign of bilingual competence, not confusion.

Their brain is doing something really sophisticated: pulling from two full language systems and choosing the best tool for the moment.

Bilingual speakers switch between languages based on context, emotion, or whichever word comes to them fastest. It's fluid, it's natural, and it's incredibly common.

Research shows that fluent bilinguals code-switch all the time. It means they have full access to both languages.

Meet Ms. Karolyn.

14 years of teaching across the US and abroad, a Bachelor’s in Spanish Education, a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction, and time spent living in Spain, Mexico, and Peru. Growing up in a bilingual Polish household sparked a lifelong love of languages that has shaped everything she does.

She’s also raising two bilingual kids herself, so she knows firsthand what it takes to nurture a multilingual learner.

After the first week, children often come home saying "I don't know what they said."

That feeling of reaching, of not quite having the word, and hunting for it, is exactly where the language gets rooted.

The brain is working hard in those early weeks. It's building something real. It just doesn't look like anything yet.

It's uncomfortable for about three weeks. Then something shifts.

A word lands.

A phrase clicks.

And then another.

If your child is in that first-week fog right now, hang tight.

You're not behind.

You're exactly where you're supposed to be.

Language teaches through the doing of it. The pausing, the reaching, the not-quite-right-and-trying-again. A translation...

Language teaches through the doing of it. The pausing, the reaching, the not-quite-right-and-trying-again. A translation app can give you the word. It can't give you the patience, the humility, or the quiet thrill of being understood in a language that wasn't yours yet.

Those things get built in the classroom, in the circle, in the mess of real immersion. And they stay with your child long after the vocabulary does 🤍

Music makes language stick in a way that drills never could.

When kids learn Spanish through song, they’re absorbing rhythm, vocabulary, and pronunciation all at once without even realising they’re studying.

It’s one of the most natural ways to build confidence in a new language!

She’s been my sidekick for 11 years.

When my last class said “adios Maria” I knew it was the last time. And man... it hit differently.

It seems silly to be emotional about a puppet. But I love my students, I love teaching, and this transition is harder than I expected.

The online program is incredible though. The way we’ve been able to replicate the in-person experience is something most programs can’t do. I cannot wait to see what’s ahead 🤍

Because here's the thing: language acquisition is mostly invisible. It happens quietly, in the background, until suddenly... it isn't.

These are the real green flags we look for with our students. And most parents are completely surprised when we point them out.

Parents often worry when their child isn’t speaking Spanish right away but, silence is a normal, healthy part of language learning.

Children build language internally long before they express it externally.

They’re listening, absorbing, processing, and making meaning.

Speaking early does **not** mean learning faster.

Feeling safe, connected, and confident does.

At Las Lengüitas, we never force output.

We create a joyful environment where speech emerges naturally, in the child’s own time not ours.
