This video makes prevalent the racism and inequality ingrained into our society. Same task with 3 people of different color and socioeconomic status, the reaction of the others should have been the same right? Why weren't the reactions the same? Ask yourself how you would react. Then ask yourself have you reacted differently in the past according to someone's color or clothes. Let's stop pointing fingers at each other and unite to solve this issue in our country and workd!! #MLKWartburg
#MLKWARTBURG Check out this video. It gives a good insight into the different ways racism is still a problem in our society today.

Social Work with Veterans - Thursday May 14th noon-1pm
Hey guys! Check out this video to hear my experience with Respite Options. Being involved in Social Work has changed my life for the better. My favorite part about being in this department was how accepting students were as I switched into this major. I have some lifelong friends, amazing roommates, and supportive and caring professors because of this department!

I've shared this before but want to share again. Greater Minnesota Family Services (www.greaterminnesota.org) is hiring across the state in MN. We currently have open positions ranging from working with Early Childhood Mental Health, In-Home Family Mental Health, and School Mental Health. We have Master's Level and Bachelor's Level openings. We also have new opportunities for Bachelor's level without experience in our day treatment settings! I've worked for Greater Minnesota for 3 years and the agency is amazingly supportive and a great environment to work in. I'd love to see a fellow Wartburg College Social Work Alum or anyone you know to come and work with us! Let me know if you have questions.

-Wartburg's Social work program established in 1945

[02/03/21]   There’s a lot of importance to celebrating Black History Month! Throughout the month, resources about Black History Month will be posted (on this page and our Instagram - @wartburgcollegesocialwork). Today, here is some basic knowledge about how Black History Month came to be!

Black History Month Knowledge:
•In 1926, Carter G. Woodson and Jesse E. moorland founded “Negro History Week”
•Since 1976, every U.S President has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month in the US.
•According to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH); the theme this year is “The Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity.”
•Many other countries, such as Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and the Netherlands celebrate Black History Month.

‘Intergroup anxiety’: Can you try too hard to be fair? 01/18/2021

‘Intergroup anxiety’: Can you try too hard to be fair?

The definition of intergroup anxiety is the ambiguous feelings of discomfort or anxiety when interacting with members of other groups. I did not know the definition of this term before watching the video. People try to appear fair to those who are different or marginalized, but are actually perpetuating social inequalities. I learned that there are many forms in which this anxiety can be present, such as unnatural smiling, thought monitoring or limiting interactions with others different than ourselves.

Personally, I feel that I have had intergroup anxiety, but never even observed or admitted that I have had it! It’s important to have more interactions with a diverse amount of individuals to learn how to combat this form of anxiety.

Elie Wiesel says the opposite of love is not hate, but indifference. For anyone who strives for justice, equity, or loving thy neighbor, there is no room for indifference. Not noticing and not caring is simply not acceptable. (from Jean Schenkewitz, EMBRACE)
Reflect on Elie's Wiesel's quote about indifferenc- What stands out to you the most? What is your take-away?

You might know Elie Wiesel (September 30, 1928 – July 2, 2016) from his famous and harrowing autobiography, Night, that recounts his experiences as a prisoner in a concentration camp during World War II. Though he was just a boy at that time, the experience set Wiesel on a lifelong journey to fight genocide and stand up for human rights. He delivered this speech, “The Perils of Indifference,” at the White House in 1999 as part of a speaking series to mark the end of the 20th Century.
“In a way, to be indifferent to that suffering is what makes the human being inhuman. Indifference, after all, is more dangerous than anger and hatred. Anger can at times be creative. One writes a great poem, a great symphony. One does something special for the sake of humanity because one is angry at the injustice that one witnesses. But indifference is never creative. Even hatred at times may elicit a response. You fight it. You denounce it. You disarm it.
Indifference elicits no response. Indifference is not a response. Indifference is not a beginning; it is an end. And, therefore, indifference is always the friend of the enemy, for it benefits the aggressor — never his victim, whose pain is magnified when he or she feels forgotten.”

Wartburg College Social Work's cover photo

[11/10/20]   Sometimes I am asked what's happening at Wartburg... What's happening with Covid... Here is a note I JUST received from President Colson. Short version - PLEASE keep masks in place, wash hands frequently (use sanitizer in the SW offices if you need it) and give plenty of space...

Dear Wartburg community,

Like many of you, I’m concerned about the increasing number of coronavirus infections in Bremer County, the state of Iowa, and the nation. Although we are nearing the end of Fall Term here on campus, this trend reminds us that our battle with the virus is far from over. We must continue to be vigilant with our masking, hand washing, and physical distancing.

Though our on-campus masking policies already exceed what the state and county have asked of us, I want to make sure you all are aware of the new limited masking policy that will take effect throughout the state at midnight tonight. The Governor will require masks during any social, community, recreational, leisure, or sporting gathering with more than 25 people indoors and 100 people outdoors. In addition, groups attending these events can number no more than eight people. The Governor also mandates masks in several service-oriented establishments, such as salons and tattoo parlors, and includes additional social distancing measures for restaurants and bars. Again, we already are observing these measures on campus, but be prepared for additional masking requirements if you leave campus, too.

On campus, the college continues taking steps to minimize your risk. Recently, we completed the installation of bipolar air ionization units in all classrooms and some office spaces. As air passes over these units, millions of positively and negatively charged ions are formed and attach to particles, pathogens, and gas molecules, breaking them apart and cleaning the air in the process. In simple terms, these units “cleanse” the air of allergens, molds, bacteria, and viruses, among other things. Installed in the air handling units, these bipolar air ionizers will continue to benefit the college for years to come, even when SARS-CoV-2 is no longer such a great threat.

Currently, these bipolar air ionizers are operating in:

• The entirety of the Science Center, Bachman Fine Arts Center, McElroy Center, Wartburg Chapel, Neumann Auditorium, and Saemann Student Center.
• All classrooms and offices in The W and half of the common areas.
• All classrooms and offices in Vogel Library and 90 percent of the common areas.
• All of the classrooms and offices in the Rada-Aleff Classroom Technology Center.
• All of the classrooms in Luther Hall, Löhe Hall, the McCoy Living & Learning Center, and Old Main.
• About 20 percent of the classrooms in Whitehouse Business Center.

With our classroom spaces nearly complete — we do have some extra work to do in Whitehouse Business Center to finish up that project —we intend to move forward with as many office spaces and other common areas as we can. Some areas will be easier to complete than others, but we hope to install units in each of these areas, when possible. Because we are treating the residence halls as family units, these will be the last areas to be considered.

Completing this project carries a high priority, but as you know, our colleagues in Operations and Maintenance are short-handed and must continue to balance our normal needs with the extraordinary challenges posed by the pandemic.

While bipolar air ionization is one more tool in our fight against COVID-19, we cannot let down our guard. As I said before, we must continue to wear our masks, wash our hands, and keep our distance whenever possible. Let’s finish this term as we began—with everyone embracing the spirit of Knights Care.

Yours,
Darrel Colson
