This video makes prevalent the racism and inequality ingrained into our society. Same task with 3 people of different color and socioeconomic status, the reaction of the others should have been the same right? Why weren't the reactions the same? Ask yourself how you would react. Then ask yourself have you reacted differently in the past according to someone's color or clothes. Let's stop pointing fingers at each other and unite to solve this issue in our country and workd!!
Check out this video. It gives a good insight into the different ways racism is still a problem in our society today.

Social Work with Veterans - Thursday May 14th noon-1pm
Hey guys! Check out this video to hear my experience with Respite Options. Being involved in Social Work has changed my life for the better. My favorite part about being in this department was how accepting students were as I switched into this major. I have some lifelong friends, amazing roommates, and supportive and caring professors because of this department!

I've shared this before but want to share again. Greater Minnesota Family Services (www.greaterminnesota.org) is hiring across the state in MN. We currently have open positions ranging from working with Early Childhood Mental Health, In-Home Family Mental Health, and School Mental Health. We have Master's Level and Bachelor's Level openings. We also have new opportunities for Bachelor's level without experience in our day treatment settings! I've worked for Greater Minnesota for 3 years and the agency is amazingly supportive and a great environment to work in. I'd love to see a fellow Wartburg College Social Work Alum or anyone you know to come and work with us! Let me know if you have questions.

-Wartburg's Social work program established in 1945
-Oldest undergraduate program in the state of IA

The program’s strong connection to the professional community is reinforced through a National Social Work Advisory Board, consisting of social workers, agency executives, and professional leaders from across the country. It enjoys a vibrant, supportive relationship with the National Association of Social Workers and its Iowa chapter.

04/13/2022

2022 Social Work award winners: Alizah Qadri '23 (Mannie Holmes award for promoting and supporting diversity on campus) and Halley Holm '22 (St. Elizabeth award for excellence in Service, and Outstanding Senior). We are SO proud of these two, and of all our amazing students!

04/13/2022

RICE Day 2022 - Our Outstanding Senior of the Year is Halley Holm.

She shared a few thoughts at our awards ceremony:

First of all, I want to thank everyone for this opportunity. For my classmates, I think we can agree we have been through a lot together. I’m not going to go too into detail about our experience with COVID because we all lived it. However, when we went remote when COVID first started, I did not know who all the social work majors in our class were. Then when we came back in the fall of 2020, we suddenly had a class together every single day of the week. We navigated through meeting with our Older Learning Partners on Zoom together. We read and discussed many books throughout the years. Debated our thoughts on case studies. We would not have the knowledge we have today if it had not been for each other, even in the moments when we did not all agree and we challenged each other. I have seen every single one of us grow over this past semester, and I am very excited to see what the future holds for us.
I think all of us students can agree that we are extremely thankful for Tammy, Lynn, and Tricia. We have learned so much from everyone and also had fun. I asked my classmates for their favorite fun memory of each professor, and we all agreed on some key moments. For Tammy, we all loved going to her farm and holding her chicks, even though I was the only one who got pooped on. For Tricia, we loved doing Yoga Nidra in class and that we were allowed to fall asleep. And for Lynn, we loved when he asked who would be interested in dating his nephews, described them to our Social Policy class game-show style, all because his brother and sister-in-law “wanted them out of the house”. All of our professors have their unique styles, but I wanted to share these stories because the fun times were just as important as the serious times. Our education is extremely applicable to everyday life, and these fun times allowed us to lighten the at-times heavy load. After all, social workers are tasked with making the world a better and more equitable place, and we all know how many things are working against that. However, I think we are up to the challenge.

Daniel Grosser ’11 changed his major four times before discovering his love for social work. Once he decided on a direction, he was able to focus his passions through experiential learning opportunities that are a required piece of the curriculum.

“Experiential learning was key to my success at Wartburg. I really liked how I was forced to be in some uncomfortable situations and get out of my comfort zone. That meant I was getting out of the classroom and learning the skills to be able to communicate with people, actively listen to them, and then document the conversations I had, some of those case management basics I still use,” Grosser said.

Currently, Grosser is both a probation officer in the First Judicial District of the Department of Correctional Services and a Mental Health Counselor at Black Hawk-Grundy Mental Health. To learn more about his story, go to: https://www.wartburg.edu/daniel-experiential-learning-was-key-to-my-success/

Thanks to a donation from the Tomson Family Foundation, more students will be able to have deeper experiential learning opportunities without any additional financial stress.

We already have raised more than $5,600. Keep telling your story, sharing the link and encouraging others to donate. To learn more about our program and to make a gift, go to www.wartburg.edu/fund-sw.

Social Work 75th Anniversary 09/29/2021

Social Work 75th Anniversary

The Wartburg College Department of Social Work is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year! Our graduates from this program often share how thankful they are for the expansive skill set that the college has equipped them with. As we celebrate this special anniversary, we are asking for your help to continue to expand our experiential learning programs for future social workers.

We are raising money to provide field experience students with stipends for their field placement. The Tomson Family foundation has made a $25,000 gift to establish the Tomson Family Foundation-Social Work Faculty Endowment Fund. We are seeking to match this fund by raising an additional $25,000. This will ensure that students are able to accept experiential learning opportunities without having to worry about the costs they might incur.

Do any of you remember "Baby Day" in SW 201 (Human Behavior)? Due to the ongoing pandemic I am planning a "virtual" baby day this year on Friday October 15th. Do you have short videos (under 1 minute) of your baby/child that shows off one or more developmental milestone that I can share with the students? Our classes meet in person (masks required), but I think we will hold off one more year on in-person kids in the classroom just to be safe. Either narrate the video to tell us what to look for (but DON'T say how old the child is) or write comments for me to use, and include in a comment or title your name, the child's name, the child's age and anything you want the students to know about either your child or the importance of learning about child development. I'd like to have links to videos by Oct 12th. Many, many thanks!
