Waverly-Shell Rock Community School District

This is the official website of the Waverly-Shell Rock Community School District. We are the home of the Go-Hawks. We are comprised of 7 schools: Margaretta Carey Elementary, Southeast Elementary, West Cedar Elementary, Shell Rock Elementary, Middle School, Senior High School, and W-SR Residential/Lied Center.

Operating as usual

[08/30/21]   The water appears to be receding near Southeast Elementary, but not quickly enough for a normal dismissal. Here is the plan for the end of the day dismissal:

Bus riders who normally shuttle to the high school will be dismissed 10 minutes early at 3:00 to allow those buses to get out of the area before we transport walkers.

All other students will dismiss at the normal 3:10 time and be shuttled across the water to the corner of 4th St. and Crestwood Ave. SE, where they were picked up this morning.

Parents who are picking up students should park away from the corner and walk to pick students up at that corner. School staff will be there with the children.

[08/30/21]   Due to street flooding, 7th St. is closed. Please access Southeast Elementary from the south. Use great care while driving, and walkers should be alert to some water in the street. Everyone—use caution, drive slowly, be patient! Thank you!

The Waverly-Shell Rock School District and Board of Education have identified two sites in Waverly for new elementary schools to be built if the bond issue is approved March 2. One is a property located on the city’s northeast side along Horton Road, south of St. Mary's Catholic Church and across from the Hind's addition. The other is just west of the CUNA Mutual property.

One of the main reasons for selecting these sites is that they provide enough land to build new schools with the capacity we need. This is difficult to find in the heart of Waverly.

Some community members have asked the question: Because these sites are on the edges of town, would we no longer have “neighborhood schools?”

Check out this side-by-side map of Waverly in 1960 versus 2020. Back then, the schools were on the edge of town. Over the years, housing development surrounded the sites, creating the neighborhood school environment we know today.

The Waverly-Shell Rock School District has reached a purchase agreement for a second elementary school site in Waverly if the March 2 bond issue is approved.

The property is located on the city’s northeast side along Horton Road, just south of St. Mary's Catholic Church and across from the Hind's addition.

If the $31 million bond issue is approved, the district would build a new elementary school at this site, as well as a new elementary school on a portion of the Champions Ridge property on the southwest side of Waverly. The district would also make key facility improvements to the existing Shell Rock Elementary School and WSR High School.

In conducting the site selection work, the district and board have reviewed numerous factors, including road access and potential traffic concerns.

To learn more about the district’s needs and the proposed solution that will appear on the March 2 ballot, visit https://www.wsrfacilities.org.

If you would like to vote early for the March 2 bond issue election, there are a couple of ways you can do so.

The first is a satellite voting opportunity for residents of Bremer County, who can vote early on Tuesday, February 16, from 4:30 to 8:00 p.m., at WSR High School. There will be boys’ basketball games taking place at the high school, as well, but anyone can come in and vote. Enter the east doors as if coming to an event in the auditorium or gym.

The second is via an absentee ballot. Requests for those must be received by the county auditors by Friday, February 19.
